Budget Critique...

Okay Ladies, DH and I need a new car, this is our monthly budget...

Income:

Hubs: $900

Me:  $456

Total: $1356

Expenses:

Rent: $425     Electric: $100    Phone: $130     Food: $200     Gas: $230

Misc.:  $100     Tithes: $130

Total: $1315

Left Over:  $41

We split our leftover half into savings and half into checking...

We have $2500 in savings and $2,000 currently in checking. We don't have any children. My husbands income is just a rough average because he does insulation and doesn't always get 40 hours a week. So, my question is what can we do to fit a car payment into our budget? We are looking to buy a car for less than $10,000 so its not going to be a huge payment or anything.

TIA!

Rachael

Re: Budget Critique...

  • I'm sorry I meant to put this in Money Matters! Embarrassed
  • I'm working on our budget right now too. Where's your insurance, other utilities (gas, trash, water/sewer), Internet/cable, medical? Why is your income so low?

  • Like Ojo said where is your insurance?  Also if you really want to fit in a car payment i would get rid of tithe.  Can you reduce your phone plans?
  • I'd cut tithe to 30 dollars and reduce the phone plan.

  • I don't see a complete budget from you, as previous commenters have said. Insurance, water/trash/sewer (unless those are included in your rent?), cable/internet, etc all need to be accounted for. $100 seems like a low estimate for miscellaneous expenses for an entire month.

Unless you can cut down your phone bill and tithes each month (and really, I get the desire to be generous, but $130 is a lot on your income), and account for all other aforementioned expenses currently not listed on your budget, I'd wait longer to get a new car. You have to keep in mind that you won't JUST be paying a car payment; you'll have to add more onto your car insurance, plus routine maintenance costs, and any repairs that will inevitably come up over time. And with just $40 left over on a budget that already seems incomplete to me... that would be rough.

She went in to more detail on Money Matters.  Tithing, blessings from God, you must make monetary donations to be blessed, blah blah blah.  I think she decided not to get the car.
