Musty smell on just washed clothes
Our clothes have a gross dusty/musty smell, even after I just washed them. I ran my washer with just hot water and bleach, and I don't let the clothes sit in the washer. I have a dehumidifier running at all times in the basement where the laundry area is. We have well water, if that makes any difference. This smell started recently; we have lived here for five years with no smelly clothes. Please help if you know what to do about this.
Re: Musty smell on just washed clothes
Are you sure they're dry enough? Some of my clothes get that way if they're not quite dry out of the dryer. I always dry an extra couples minutes to be sure. Esp. with towels.
Add vinegar to the wash cycle.
Are you sure it's not the closet they're stored in? Sometimes closets can have a smell to them. Do you leave clothes stacked in the basement? It may be wetter than normal down there due to weather and that will contribute to the smell as well.
Have you had your well water tested? Sometimes our well water starts to smell weird and it's because of a random harmless mineral buildup. The county tells us what to do about it and it's an easy fix (last time they just added peroxide to the well). Don't do it without an evaluation though.
Do you have a front loader washer? If so, run a cloth with bleach around the rubber part on the inside - sometimes mildew accumulates there.
Ditto running a load with vinegar on hot. I'd also try to run an empty load with bleach.
Were the clothes that smell musty ever accidentally left in the wash? Vinegar will help if they were.
Tide makes a washing machine cleanser, too.
This was my first thought...is it a front load?
Does water from the tap have mineral smell to it?
Sometimes a well water will have a mineral smell to it. If so, this smell can transfer to your clothes. There are filtration systems that can be added to a well but this is a bit of an investment.
If you already have a filtration system, then check to see if the filters need to be changed/cleaned.
I put vinegar in every load of laundry, it makes the soap residue and anything else rinse out better. I put it in the softener section of the machine and it works like a charm, especially with the towels. Vinegar is cheap too, much cheaper than fabric softener or anything you will buy to cover up the smell!
