gas poll

When you get gas, do you turn the car off?  I have always done this, and thought that is what you're supposed to do, but DH never turns off the car.  I've noticed that a lot of people don't.  Isn't there some danger to that, or am I making things up?

Re: gas poll

  • I always do but my mo and dad dont.

It clearly says, "turn off engine. no smoking." I've never noticed anyone not turn the engine off except for the driver of the super crappy VW bus type vehicle we took to our resort in Jamaica. I just figured it was Jamaica and safety standards just weren't the same. He was also on his cell phone and smoking. Amazing, no? ;-)

  • I always turn off the car, so does DH.

I always assumed if I kept the car running it could cause an explosion or something because the spark plugs were still sparking the gas in order for the engine to run.

  • I always do, so does DH. Don't know why you wouldn't.
  • We always turn the engine off. I get very angry when people pull up to the pump and do not turn the car off. I feel they are endangering the rest of the patrons by risking starting a fire. I am the person that will ask them to turn it off.

  • That is my pet peeve when people don't.  Which my husband has tried many times.

I thought I remembered someone telling me the danger of it is the spark it creates when starting the car.  I *think* (but don't know for sure) that it is okay technically either on or off, but never start it in the middle of a pump.  I however am in the camp of take no chances, always turn it off, and hope no one calls me either.  LOL.

Dude, this is what you get "very angry" about? This was on myth busters a while back & is you are driving a 1974 Impala you might have something to worry about, but I'm guessing you are NOT driving a 1974 so don't be bat.***.crazy yelling at people or we will see you on the 6 o'clock news.
  • I always turn it off. I think the only time DH or I haven't turned it off was when we were having troubles with our car not starting.  It makes me nervous.

  • I always turn off the car.  One of my friends didn't one time, and I still remember that day.  I sat there convinced the car was going to blow up, and we were going to die. [/drama queen]

You really think I would yell at some stranger for not turning off their car? If someone is smoking or filling up the car with engine on and using the same gas pump as me, I will ask them to quit smoking or turn the car off. I am pretty classy gal... I don't yell at people.

I don't think there's anything wrong with politely asking someone who's using the same pump as you to put their cigarette out or turning their engine off while pumping their gas.  I'm guessing people would give more attitude for having to stop smoking rather than turning their engine off anyway.

  • I got reamed for talking on my cell phone once.  It was a conversation where my friend was having a crisis and there was no way I could get her off the phone.   I've never done it since.

I do turn my car off.

My first car was a '74 Impala. I don't even want to guess what the gas mileage was on that sucker. The good news: I could fit more people in there than most mini vans. :-)

I bet that backseat was like a sofa! Toss some throw pillows in there & hit the road.
  • I dare someone to ask me to do anything at a gas pump - including shutting off my car in icy depths of winter. Not happening. Gas fumes just dont explode if you can smell they are there - there has to be a perfect level of vapors/air that makes it flammable. Google UEL and LEL of gasoline.

Omg, and if they asked me to stop talking on my phone? Holy crapp, I'd give them the dirtiest look, and continue talking.

  • I always do but I don't think you HAVE to. DH never does in the winter. He has a diesel truck and that thing takes forever to warm up so he doesn't shut it off if he doesn't have to. It also is a huge tank so he usually jumps back in and stays warm while it fills up.

Do I really think that you would yell at some stranger? Based off your "very angry" response...yes. I don't know you from Adam and the first thing that I read from you is this.

I'm glad that you don't yell at random people. The smoking thing is a no brainer, but if you ask me to turn my car off while I'm pumping gas because you are scared that it is going to blow up....well you will kind of seem like a crazy.beoch at that point and not a classy gal.

Oh and for the record....leaving my car running while I pump gas isn't something that I do on a regular basis, but if it is 30 below you can bet that my car isn't getting shut off.

How is asking someone to abide by the posted rules classless thins to do? For the record I think you seem like the crazy one... taking a person's (who you don't know) response and blowing way out of proportion.
