A teething baby..

Is officially the most stressful thing in the world.  We've tried it all and nothing soothes him.

Advice greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

PS.. my kid refused to put anything in his mouth besides his fingers.  He hates the cold teethers, frozen wash clothes and the baby origel makes him scream bloody murder.

Re: A teething baby..

  • Mags got her first teeth at 15 weeks and has a ton more to go (she is up to 12 now)! It is awful. We used the teething tablets... those seem to help calm her down. Also, I highly recommend Motrin, seriously we don't leave home without it. It is stronger than tylenol and lasts longer (every 6 hours). You can also do Motrin then tylenol after 4 hours and then motrin 4 hours after that. We found that motrin helped ease her pain.

We also got this for Maggie. She loved chewing on it especially once she figured out it vibrated. She hated the cold wash clothes and cold teethers too.

HTH. I am a firm believer that children should be born with all their teeth!

  • I swear by wooden spoons. The big thick kind you use to stir flour into bread dough. Every teethign kid I've ever taken care of has loved chewing on those things... and has stopped the tears.

My hippie friends seem to love the amber teething necklaces.

  • My family swears by whiskey on the gums

  • try frozen carrots, seriously. Freeze whole carrots for a few hours and then give it to him. Anders loves it and it works really well (though he totally looks like a bunny!) we only will give meds if he has a fever and is a mess, honestly, with the carrots, we have only given motrin once.

  • we did frozen celery and very cold oranges out of the fridge cut in quarters that he would suck on. Eli won't use any of the teethers and only ever wanted his fingers too. If it gets really bad we try teething tabs or motrin. Also, he HATES the oragel but after he screams bloody murder for a minute or two (i think he hates the taste) it would calm the pain long enough for me to get him to sleep. Eli has 8 teeth and is working on his molars right now which really stink.

    Good luck.

  • Be careful using baby orajel and other liquid teething things like it.  Read this article from WebMD.

Motrin seems to work the best for Parker, but frozen carrots worked for us too.

Don't be surprised if you don't see anything pop through right away.  Supposedly, it hurts them more when they are coming up from the jaw through the gums.  Parker had a hard time teething, but it wasn't until a month later that they broke through the skin and that didn't bother him at all.  We are teething again right now, but I'm assuming we won't see the little boogers for a month or so.

Mags is going 2 at a time. she got all 8 front by 7 months then stalled until 11 months. I wish they would all just come at once.

  • Thanks guys.  I will try the frozen carrots and look in to the teething tablets.  I am so anti-medicine for myself, that I hate to give him anything besides Tylenol.  The tough part with the things to chew on is not that he just doesn't like them, but that he seriously won't even put them in his mouth!!

I bought the "naturals" kind that is Benzocane free and made with Clove Oil.
