A sales girl @ Victoria's Secret this wknd kept calling me "sweetheart"

"how are you doing, sweetheart," "can I help you find something sweetheart?"...and I wanted to throat punch her.  She couldn't have been more than 22/23?  I just don't understand this phenomenon.  I know its been going on for a while now (younger girls using these "endearing" yet underlyingly condescending terms for people older than them) but it makes me mental.  It seems "hon" is more commonplace (one of her VS co-workers actually called me this in the dressing room), and I still hate it, but "sweetheart" is just a whole new level of annoyance.  And you really can't say anything back about it without looking bitter or overly sensitive or something--kwim?

Anyone else in this camp with me?

Re: A sales girl @ Victoria's Secret this wknd kept calling me "sweetheart"

  • I hear ya sister. I HATE those terms. I used to have a female boss that called everyone hun, dear, BABE. I hated it. I would even find myself saying those words to customers. I say babe to DH when we are in private, but that is all. It feels awkward for especially a woman to say those things to me and I hear them a lot. I noticed too that it seems to be the younger generation using those terms. I also once worked for a man that called all the women in the office Dear and that was just plain creepy.
  • 100% with you, that is horribly obnoxious. There was a med school classmate of mine who did this - "sweetheart" was her favorite, and it made everyone BSC. It's just so forced & insincere.

Yes!  This is exactly what it is!
