Potty Training help PLEASE

Someone tell me how to get my child to go #2 on the toilet. He holds it for days so he doesnt have to go on the toilet. When he does go he hides. Words of wisdom would be much appreciated!!

Re: Potty Training help PLEASE

  • Fortunately, E potty trained herself with #2 before she was even out of diapers.  Unfortunately, we are still dealing with accidents peeing in her undies all the time.  One fight we had was using the bathroom before we go somewhere.  If she doesn't have to go that instant, we would go, and then she'd end up peeing in the car.  I started drawing little animals/doodles/whatever with permanent marker on a square of toilet paper and asking her if she wanted to pee on "xyz".  It works every time.  She doesn't see it as being told to use the bathroom, she sees it as a fun target to pee on.  Maybe Hunter would do the same with #2?  E seems to think it's pretty cool when she gets to poop on something, she's weird!
  • I'll try anything so I will try that. He does not mind going to the bathroom just have to get over this "fear?" of #2.

  • Ugh, stressful, I know - I would back off on potty training a bit though. If he keeps holding it, he'll get constipated, then he'll be uncomfortable when he does go -> scared to go -> more holding & constipation. I think a lot of kids are scared to #2, I don't really understand why but I know it makes them nervous.

My older son was scared to go on the toilet but he also liked to "hide" or be alone, so we started asking him to go in the bathroom (diaper on) and let us know when he was done. Then after he wasn't too scared about that, we had him actually sit on the toilet (still with diaper on) & go. Eventually we had him help take off his diaper & sit there. It took maybe 2-3 weeks where we went through these "steps to the toilet" but overall I thought it went pretty smoothly.

We also let him read a story on the toilet, sat in there on the edge of the tub with him if he wanted, etc (again, try to get past the nerves).  I've read that it can help to get them a little stool to rest their feet on, since it's uncomfortable for them if their feet are dangling.

Good luck - hope this helps. Big Smile

  • Believe me he's not constipated when he does go, and I'm only talking one or two days without going not weeks at a time. I am not sure if it's a fear or not. He's excellent on the #1 - no accidents at all.

  • Oh, that's good news, I thought you meant he was holding it for a long time.

So do you think it's not a fear of #2 but he's just not doing it for other reasons? If you think he's not scared, I would bribe.

Bribery is a great parenting method, works for me all the time. Stick out tongue

Seriously, though, once my kiddo was over the fear of the poop, we let him make a sticker chart & he got to put a sticker on any time he went. Then when he had a bunch (a week?) of stickers we got him some little trinket like a Hot Wheels or whatever. I know some people give their kids treats like M&Ms.
