Gift for deployed BIL help please!

Hey ladies: I'm not a regular on this board.. but I thought I would re-post this from my post on D&R and see if you all could help me! Thank you! :)

I need some help ladies. My sister is sending a big care package to my BIL (her husband), in Afghanistan. He just got there last week. He said he's no where near a general store like he was in Iraq. So he asked her to send basic stuff: ramen noodles, toothpaste, shampoos, etc. She's so sweet and made like 15 little packages of all the basics that he can save for himself but she anticipates that he will share them with the other guys. Well.. I wanted to throw something in the package and was just curious if you all had any ideas. Just something thoughtful. But it's kind of hard because I obviously can't send just anything, like a gift card to somewhere. And I also don't want to send something ridiculous that he cant use. So.. I just wanted to see if any of you ladies have experience with this or any ideas! Thank you! :)

  • A nice, really comfortable towel. Like a fancy shmancy luxury one.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • A really nice pillow.

  • Nice sheets.
    Phone cards.
    Magazines or books.
    Dryer sheets.
    Hand/boot warmer things.
If you know what kind of music he likes, my sister would burn me a CD of new music/bands every couple of weeks to keep me kind of up to speed.
The little single serving Little Debbie warm delight things you can cook into the microwave are amazing.

  • I like receiving magazines, books, movies, and Tastycakes :)  When I first arrived I also asked for nails, screws, tools, hooks, and other things to make my space more functional and livable.  He probably has everything he "needs."  There are always packages from random groups with toothpaste, deodorant, and soap.  Let's face it - a deployed guy really only needs a bar of soap and a razor.  So send him stuff he might want to make his life more comfortable and less boring.  If he plays video games I'm sure he'd also enjoy some of those.  Oh - and good air freshners.  I swear AAFES only sells the air freshners here that don't sell in the States.
  • Individually wrapped snacks:  granola bars, crackers, trail mix, etc.  Large open packages attract pests, so it's better to have things wrapped in individual servings, if possible, or divided up into ziplocks.  Great for throwing in a pocket or pack.

Water mix-ins, again individual packets.  You can only drink bottled water, it it can be hard to find soda or gatorade sometimes, so mix-ins are great.  They come in tons of flavors.

    Magazines and books are good.

Nothing electronic, like those cheesy electronic games.  Those can't be thrown away because the enemy will use them to make IEDs, so they end up piling up everywhere....

Baby wipes are great.  The toilet paper there is horrible....and it's nice to be able to wipe down after a workout or when you're feeling icky and the showers aren't working (happens often).

    Ditto air fresheners.

3M Command Hooks are great, and so are christmas lights/patio lights.
