Niagara Falls / NY Fingerlakes
We just booked a trip up for September. 3 nights on the Canada side of Niagara, 2 nights near Seneca Lake. Neither of us have been since we were tiny and there's an awful lot of to-dos to sort through -- anyone have any suggestions for things to see and do or places to eat?
Re: Niagara Falls / NY Fingerlakes
Go visit my ILs. MIL makes awesome Lasagna! Oh and there is always dessert!
Other than that, we love hiking along the Niagara Escarpment . There are various waterfalls, trails, etc...I don't know that area specifically you are going to, but ILs are a bit more North and there are tons of awesome hikes and I'm sure the same can be said of the more southern part.
PS: This took me forever to type because Ella is "helping"

Hi Ella!
The pictures on that site look great - totally bookmarked.

Where are you staying on Seneca Lake? The Seneca Lake Wineries are my favorite ones to visit!! You have to do some wine tasting if you are there. I love the restaurant at Wagners Winery (Ginny Lee, I think?) as well as the restaurant inside of Glenora. Captain Bills is also something to look in to, they do boat cruises on the lake (they are located right in Watkins Glen). Watkins Glen State Park is nice too if you are in to hiking at all. They have some really pretty waterfalls, although coming from Niagara Falls they will seem tiny! There are also some oulets in Geneva. I've never been, but I've heard they have some good shopping.
Watkins Glen is about an hour and a half from where I live and my brother used to live there, so I've spent entirely too much time in that town! It's a beautiful place to visit in the summer, the lake is gorgeous.

I *think* it's close to a couple wineries.

I'm not familiar with that exact place, but yes, you will be near the wineries. They go up and now both sides of the lake (along Route 14 on the side you will you staying, route 414 on the other side). It doesn't take long to get up and down the lake... looking at a map you are probably 10 mins from Glenora Winery, which is beautiful. You are also maybe 20 mins from Watkins Glen, so I'd look in to maybe Captain Bills for a dinner cruise.
This website should help too!

I'm from Buffalo, so I've been to the Falls a bunch and could probably answer your questions. Although there's been so much changing that I'm probably not up on the latest attractions or the best restaurants. (If you look on the Travel board, you can usually find someone asking about Niagara Falls and people usually have pretty thorough replies). Feel free to send me a PM anytime as you're planning.
The Canadian side definitely has more to do. (I'm guessing you know you need to bring your passport). There's been a lot built up on that side in the last 10 years or so. There's a couple casinos if you're into that. Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood, etc type of restaurants as well as some other chain and local restaurants. There's also fun touristy type museums - Ripley's Believe It or Not, Wax Museums, etc on and around the Clifton Hill area. There's Botanical Gardens (and I think they have a butterfly conservatory). Like Maria said there's trails all around the Falls area (on both US and Canadian sides).
Some things to do if you haven't done them before:
- Maid of the Mist
- Jet Boat Tours
- Skylon Tower (revolving dining room at top of tower)
- Niagara-on-the-Lake (artsy area with restaurants and vineyards) - you could probably make a whole day of this area
What types of things were you hoping to do?
I really have no idea.
I know Mark wants to do Maid of the Mist. Other than that, everything's up in the air. It's really just to get away and have a little break.
I've been told that Niagara-on-the-Lake has wineries that make ice wine and that's work checking out. (What is ice wine?!) And, I'm a history buff so I'll probably look for some historical stuff.

Ice wines are just super sweet desert wines...not as fun as it sounds. I'm not a fan of sweet wine, so I don't like them at all, but if you like sweet wines then you'll love these.
