Help me pick out a vacation spot for this summer...

DH & I are trying to plan a summer vacation with a couple with whom we are friends.  We're probably looking at the first week of August.  The couple has some financial limitations, so we're trying to be relatively frugal.  I've been looking at some online deals, but if we could get a deal on a hotel/house/condo somewhere within driving distance it might end up cheaper.  Super bonus points for somewhere we can bring our dogs.

Any suggestions?

I love my life.

  • Are you at all interested in camping ?  Or staying in cabins?  If so, I would recommend something in the Shenandoah Valley--it's absolutely gorgeous and has lots of camping spots/"rustic" cabins in state and national parks.  DH and I went there on our honeymoon and loved it--we love living near there too, as it's the perfect getaway spot from the city.  Camping is definitely cheap, too!  If you're more interested in the beach, VA Beach, Ocean City MD, and the Outer Banks are all within pretty easy driving distance, and sometimes you can find really cheap places on Priceline or hotels.com.  Or try Craigslist--they have a section for vacation rentals.

  • TRy VRBO.com for rentals.  Some fun spots are Charlottesville, Williamsburg, Outer Banks
  • i jsut saw this on HomeRun (doesn't help with the dog issue...)

  • How far are you willing to drive?

We're going to Gatlinburg, TN for a week for about $700 (not including gas or groceries).  We have a 4 person cabin with a hot tub on the porch and resort pool.

There's ton of stuff to do in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge (wax museums, haunted houses, Niagara Falls type stuff)... but with the peace of the mountains.  We usually stay away from the town and do mostly hiking.

We used this rental place. You can narrow it down by pet friendly cabins.

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions!
