Resume questions

I'm helping MIL with her resume and I have a couple questions about things I didn't encounter with mine...

How far back should her work history go? She listed her entire work history. She was at the majority of her jobs for only 2-3 years with one job she was at for 13 years. She had about 5 different jobs before that job and 3 since. She started the 13 year job in 1994.If she can get away with not listing things prior to that, I think it would look better.

Also, she listed it as years so 1990-1991. Is that enough or should it have months? I think she did this because some jobs she may have had for a couple months covering two years making it look like she was there longer. Also, recently she had difficulty finding a job and I think she is trying to cover up that gap.

Re: Resume questions

  • When I go through resumes, I only really like to see jobs that somehow pertain to the one the person is applying for, and not just a list of what they've done. Assuming your MIL's past jobs are relating to the job she is applying to, I would list the last 3-4 jobs, ending with the 13 year job.

As for listing months, I would, just for honesty's sake. It's not likely that they'd check with these companies, unless she is listing someone at one of them as a reference, but it's possible.

Just curious, but why did she only hold a few jobs for a couple of months?

  • Unless its very relevant to the job or really impressive, I'd only go back 10 years or so.

I've listed jobs by years, not months.  Honestly, I really can't remember exactly when I left/started some jobs.

If she only had certain jobs for a few months, I'd probably leave them off my resume.

Its not a legally binding document, just an introduction to you and your skills, experiences, etc.

  • That I'm not sure of, those were in the 70s and 80s. Most recently, she left because she was managing and was on call 24/7. She really liked a lot about that job, but it was more pressure than she wanted. The job she is looking at now is not management.

I wouldn't list anything before 1990 on her resume - just make a note that says various management positions between 19XX and 19XX; details upon request.
