Overseas Spouse = MIA Friends

I guess when your spouse deploys/goes to work overseas is when you truly figure out who your friends are. Or at least that's the case for me.  So many people said to K before she left "Don't worry, we'll take care of J and the baby" and yet they are never around.  I don't need to be taken care of, but to be included in activities now and again would be nice. The 4th was our first holiday without K or family (I went home for Easter) and not a single person attempted to include DD and I in their weekend parties.  I reached out to people too. I tried to meet up with people but nothing worked.

If DW decides to go overseas again I'm definitely moving home.  I love my child dearly but I would give anything to hand her over to family for 3 hours so I could get a pedicure or go to the movies.

I don't know how you ladies do multiple deployments.  I realize overall things are great and LO and I are having a great time and a good life.  But when these moody pity party moments hit they are awful. Stick out tongue

Anyone else want to let out a Tuesday morning vent?

lol! I just realized I used the sentence that I hate hearing and I'm sure you all hear way too often.  Oops, sorry.

  • Don't sweat, it.  I've noticed over the years that people who aren't directly involved in this kind of life feel awkward around us.  They don't mean anything by it.  I once had a friend tell me she didn't invite me to a party because she didn't think I would be up for it and she didn't want me to be a big downer for everyone else.  Thanks.  People suck sometimes, but you are right.  You really do figure out who your friends are when your SO goes overseas.

  • Sometimes you have to get the ball rolling by inviting people over for lunch, out to coffee, for a playdate, or whatever.   You may be able to find a few people who will be available for regular get-togethers so you can set something up every week or every other week.

ITA.  I have a group of 'mom' friends whom I get together with a few times a month. I guess yesterday I was just missing that 'family' feel.

I need to focus on finding a babysitter.  I've had a mother's helper but it just never clicked enough for me to leave her alone with LO (she usually just played with her so I could do yard work, pay bills, etc).   Having just a few hours to myself would be awesome.

  • Two-FWIW I have found it isn't just deployments with me I can't get some one to eat dinner with me when M is on swings or nights. Ok, putting my BGP back on now...

  • I've learned that you learn who your real friends are when you go through hard times in general, not just deployments.
