Military ID?

I will be buying my husband's plane ticket home from bootcamp soon and I have to make sure the name matches directly what will be on his ID.  Do military ID's have middle names on them?

Re: Military ID?

  • Sometimes.  My current one does not, but my last one had the first two letters of my middle name.  I don't think my husband's has his middle name, but I'm not sure.

  • Thanks, I didn't know if they all were the same (first middle last) I guess I will write him and ask, hopefully he gets the letter soon and can respond!

  • Mine does. Well it has two out of 3 middle names. I think it partially has to do with how long your name is. They told me 16 characters was max which is why I got two middle names but not all 3.

I'd say if you put Last, First MI it should be fine. Doesn't he have his drivers license as well? That way if they question he has two forms of ID on him.

  • Did they specifically say that the middle name has to be on the plane ticket as well?  Usually they just care about the first and last names being exact, since middle names aren't always used, and sometimes it's just an initial.

FTR, I'm almost positive my H's full middle name is on his ID.

  • DH's has his full name.

  • Thanks for the help.  I called the airline and they said it has to match exactly what is on his ID. However, they did tell me that you can call them and change the name on the ticket (adding or taking away middle name) up to 24 hours before check-in, so I will just change it when I see him for Family Day!

  • I've never given my middle name when buying a plane ticket.  I may have given a mi, but never the full middle name.  I think you'll be fine with just the MI

    Ditto.

  • I'm just wondering, is this because you bought a military discounted ticket?  I've never known them to be so particular about the middle name and am just curious.

Nope, just a regular ticket online.  They ask for first, middle, last.  I called them and they said that whatever is lists on the ID has to be the same as what is listed on the reservation.  So, if the ID has a middle name, then the reservation does as well.

  • I've given pretty much every form of my name and never had a problem.  Even when they say it must exactly match, like with credit card orders, I never give a MI despite it being on the card.

I've booked regular and military rate flights, and I doubt I've ever given a MI for H or me, just b/c I prefer to use just first and last regardless of documentation, and I've never even had anyone question or ask for another form of ID.  Even when my ticket was flagged b/c I had the same name as a criminal in the country I was traveling to, they never hassled me (other than having to wait at immigration a bit longer while they checked on me in a special area).

  • I flew internationally on a passport with my married name while my ticket showed my maiden name. I had our marriage license and stuff to show and it was no big deal. Pretty sure a middle name is not going to cause a fluster.

Supposedly, TSA is starting to be really strict about these kinds of things. The last few plane tickets I've purchased through different airlines have all required DOB, gender, etc., along with stating that the middle name must match ID exactly. They used to just ask for the traveler's name, not any of that extra info. This must just be for their computers for now and not for getting through security, though, because only the last name, first and MI have been printed on the boarding passes.

Either way, while I don't think it would make or break anything if the ticket had the MI and the ID had the full middle name or vice versa, I think you (OP) are smart for making sure it's done correctly -- just in case!

  • My husbands has his full name.

I think you'd be ok putting first mi lastname either way.  Also, would he have his license on him for the trip?  If so, you could match the name to that and have no worries.
