dslr camera

We are considering getting a dslr camera.  N was looking at the Nikon 5100 and the Canon t3i.  Does anyone have experience with any of these?  Any other dslrs you recommend?  Any help is appreciated!

Re: dslr camera

  • You really can't go wrong with either brand - they are the best out there and will give you the widest options for lenses and growth as you get to know the camera more. Try to get to a place where you can hold both models in your hands and see which feels better.  I'm partial to B&H but, Adorama also has an excellent reputation (both in the city).

Remember that the most important part of the camera is the lens so, plan to spend accordingly.  The kit lenses that come with bundles are notoriously sub-par and are not meant to last.  You are far better off buying just the camera body and getting a good lens with a zoom range to start out.  I highly recommend (for either brand camera) the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8.  It's very sharp, fast and isn't too pricey.  I've been shooting with mine for over a year now and love it.

I have owned both Nikon and Canon dSLR's and love both but, am very happy to be a Canon girl now. You do get more features out of the camera and lenses for the price with a Canon.

I don't know anything about the particular Nikon model you are considering but, I will caution you to make sure it doesn't take only AF-S lenses as that will seriously limit your options (it's been an issue with some of their pro-sumer/hobbiest releases lately).

Thanks Jen! N just started researching and was finding information on these two cameras.  I told him I had to ask my nesties for recs before he could do anything :)
  • The current consumer report magazine breaks down all cameras with ratings, reviews etc.

(I have become obsessed with this magazine recently, good thing I got a year free:) )

  • I just got the Canon T1i and the 50mm 1.8 lens. The T3i seems to be more for fancy video taking so I went the 1. I LOVE it

  • I have a nikon d3000, I love it!!  I didn't upgrade the lens just yet, I figured I would learn on this and then upgrade.  My DH bought it for me for my birthday from Adorama.
