Anybody work in non-medical Elder Care?

This is something that I was looking into for a career change.

There are a few different services around town that offer basic non medical services to people including, light meal prep, light cleaning, grocery shopping, transporation to doctor appts etc.

  • I don't. However, an agency in the area investigates and assists victims of elder abuse and houses the local ombudsman program (for nursing home residents). Just another option to consider.
  • I worked for a short time for a home care company doing the tasks you listed above.  If I could do that and make what I do being a nurse I would do it in a heartbeat.  It never really seemed like work to me, I basically kept someone company and helped out with ADL's.  The only thing that could potentially be bad is if someone's home isn't that clean.  I lucked out and was with a great elderly lady who had kids that kept up with the cleaning.
  • I work part time in a retirement community kitchen and it is a lot harder work than you would think. your moving all day, usually sweating (hot kitchen & LOTS of activity), and it's not a very glamorous job. I enjoy the hours, although I am only part time the hours range from 6:30am-7:30pm, and it is really fun getting to know the residents. I also enjoy knowing I don't have to get ready for work, shower, ponytail, done. hair nets required in the kitchen and your going to be behind the scenes and sweating so make up isn't needed.

Hi! If you are kind and persevering, this could be just right for you. It's a very fulfilling job. Sometimes, you'll be down and dirty. :) I'm not looking at it as a full time job though. More like a part time. But if you have a free time, this would be great!
