A family member gave us an old car and it's in our name, but the tabs are expired. We want to go pick up the car and drive it home (15 miles or so), but apparently we can't renew tabs due to the shutdown. Think we can just drive it anyway and if we get pulled over, explain that we have no way of getting the tabs? Or would it be smarter to just wait till we can get the tabs?

Ditto, what Mrs. Raz said...
On a side note, mine were due in May, I have the new ones in the glove box, but I'm seeing how long I can go before I get pulled over
...I'm evil!
I would think that you'd be safe driving a few miles - heck, I've gone several months with expired tabs. I had the new ones, I just kept forgetting to put them on!
My sister on the other hand, drove around for TWO YEARS with expired tabs - and never got pulled over. Her husband forgot to renew them - twice! She was not a happy camper when she realized what had happened and has made a new rule that her husband is not allowed to handle anything that has a due date!
But..........why?
You probably won't get pulled over for it (unless you're doing something else wrong), but if the catch you anywhere parked with it like that you will get a ticket. People like to try to scam the system and put paid for tabs on cars that's tabs are not paid for.
Because I can...I'm 30 and living dangerously!
And yes I realize that they're supposed to be properly displayed as of the 10th of the next month, thanks for that little tidbit.
Our Jetta is a lease and for whatever reason, we didn't get the renewal notice in the mail this year. Normally VW sends it to us. I didn't even think about the tabs being up, and neither did Joe.... so we just bought the tabs about a month ago when we realized that they expired back in December. Whoops. We weren't pulled over or ticketed, which surprised me... so if you are waiting, you might be waiting for a while!

I actually was pulled over once solely for having expired tabs (2 days expired!). I had the new ones in my bag and just had forgotten to put them on. Even though I had the new tabs on me and showed them to the cop, I was still ticketed for driving with expired tabs!
I've been told by multiple police officers that the 10 day grace period for tabs is no more.
The Roseville license center is still open for renewals as well.
This is not living dangerously. It's just stupid.
Well ooookay. Purposeful irresponsibility seems silly to me but good luck with that I guess....?
(Thanks to this post for reminding me to putting the license plates on our new car. I rather like living within the law...)
I'd hardly say that what I'm doing is either stupid or irresponsbile especially since I actually paid for my tabs, but just haven't put them on yet just to see how long I can go. If I get a ticket, then oh well it's my fault and I'll pay it.
And as far as living with in the law...I gave that up a long time ago when I decided that it was perfectly acceptable to do 5mph over the speed limit even though I know I could get a ticket for that too
This confuses me...
Per MN statute 168.09(5)(2):
Subd. 5. Defenses to failure to renew. No person may be charged with violating this section by reason of failure to renew the registration of a previously registered motor vehicle, exceptthose vehicles registered under section 168.187, if: ...
(2) the person renews the registration and pays the motor vehicle tax and fees due within ten days of being cited for the violation. My Cooking Blog
Ditto this. I don't get it.
At least your car isn't out of state though. I ran into serious issues when I bought my car a few summers ago- it was purchased in WI and the dealership screwed up the paperwork, so I didn't get the title before the temp plates expired. I couldn't drive for 2 weeks (expired out of state plates = immediate tow if it's parked on 'public' property.)
Anyway. My tabs expire in August, so I'm hoping the government gets their shiit together before September.

Duh. I didn't know that before this thread, and I somehow forgot it from the time I read it to the time I typed that... I blame it on my brain thinking today is Monday
Although- I still hope the government gets their shiit together before September (well, sooner would be better of course.)
