What about Stepping Stones Museum in Norwalk?
http://www.steppingstonesmuseum.org/If you are looking for fun in the sun Quassy is a good smaller amusement park and they have a lake and a water park. If you want to go let me know I can send you a link to discount tickets. I think 17 PP all day + 5.00 parking.

I 2nd Turtleback Zoo in West Orange - far larger than Van Saun so, IMO better for a day trip.
Poughkeepsie Children's Museum is another option.
You could always come to Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow and walk around town...there are about 5 great parks in a one mile radius, including a spray park
