Grand Canyon - 3 mile rest house
This is where Gary and I spent the night (illegally) on our grand canyon '1-day' hike. The other walls were open like the two showing below.

Re: Grand Canyon - 3 mile rest house
It would have been cooler if it had been planned and not out of necessity heh.
Instead it was due to our 1-day, in and out hike turning into an overnight creepy crawly nightmare.
omg. hahaha
I told DH your story.. and despite my intention of convincing him that we shouldn't attempt it in the 9 hours of November sunlight... it made him want to do it more. hahaha
I'm extremely curious now. Was this a story shared at HH last night?
Haha! Sure, I could see how you could feel that way. It sems to have made for a funny story to look back on though.
Jen, I forgot November was when you were planning. I was there another year in late October and it was already freezing at the top...
Clseale, we stayed at the El Tovar that time. Luckily we got one night in there before our hike started.
Lucky, yes.
Here's the hike we did...these pics aren't mine. We have pics going down and none coming up. haha

Then again it's already been established that I'm a hiking wimp. I do recommend the loop to people that are in shape and not sedentary like me. heh It's amazing and awesome in every sense of that word.
Gary and I prepared for it a week in advance and by prepare I mean we bought and packed what we thought we would need - flashlights, the foil blanket, hats, hiking shoes, duct tape, rubber bands, extra socks, water bottles, red vines, tortillas, granola bars, containers of refried beans. lol
We ended up using everything by coincidence. I had those pants that convert to shorts with a zipper. They chafed my legs raw when used as shorts and Gary saved me by putting duct tape over my legs on the raw areas of the fronts of my thighs. When he made me walking sticks, he used a rock to break off the additional limbs/stubs from the main branch and used the rubber bands to make me grips. He's my very own boy scout/Macgyver.
I also ended up losing one of my big toenails a couple of weeks after the hike from trying to life my feet the bare minimum to get them over rocks and wooden steps in my path, but missing more than half the time. Gary said I kicked every rock in the canyon on my way up.
I don't think I'm THAT confident.. but I think we're a lot more likely to do okay with it knowing that it's no joke! I plan to do lots of incline treadmill walking to get prepared.
