anyone going to the shuttle launch friday?
I wish I could, but it's too early in the day for me to leave work. I'm hoping it gets delayed because we'll be in Ormond Beach Sunday for an engagement party

Re: anyone going to the shuttle launch friday?
I wish I would be, but I can't.
I heard people are going to be leaving their hotels at midnight expecting tons of traffic and delays getting to good viewing spots.
This is us too. I really wanted to go b/c DH has never seen one, but it just seems like it's going to be a logistical nightmare.
I think a lot of the people who are leaving at midnight are people who have tickets to watch the launch on center. They have to be at their buses at something ridiculous like 2am or so. I personally wouldn't be staking out a spot that early. But you're right, it's going to be super crowded in the area. They are anticipating between 750,000 and 1 million people coming to watch. But it is the last shuttle launch ever!
The weather forecast for Friday is only a 30% chance of "go". It looks like it improves some over the weekend.
You could always come visit me if you're in town! I might even be able to offer a place to stay, depending on my work schedule.
Oh, and to answer the OP, I'll be there

Yay for only 30% chance of go! But geez, sounds like it might be really crazy down there with that many people!
If it gets delayed and we try to go down, I'll let you know for sure!
I wish we could go, but both of my bosses are out this entire week so I'm stuck at work.
This may be a dumb question, but why is this the last shuttle launch? I'm not sure I understand.
They are retiring the space shuttles. Several years ago Bush announced a plan for the end of the space shuttle program after we had finished assembling the space station. He also announced a follow on program that Obama later cancelled. There are a lot of ideas floating around about what we will be doing next, but everything seems very up in the air right now.
The space station will still be inhabited (I'm not sure how long they plan on keeping that up) but the only way to get there now is on a Russian rocket. Which is fine for taking 3 people at a time, but it can't carry as much cargo as the shuttle could.
So Discovery and Endeavour have already had their last flights, and this will be the final one for Atlantis. Afterward that will be sent to museums. Atlantis will be kept here at Kennedy Space Center, Discovery will go to the Smithsonian, and Endeavour will go to LA. Enterprise, which was just a test vehicle and never flew in space, will go to NY.
