Talk to me about i phones?
I know people love theiri phones and I was trying to resist but I'm feeling the pull...are there any downsides that you wish you had known before buying? Which model do you have and recommend? Do they last longer than a typical cell phone? Most of cell phones crap out right before the end of the 2 year contract. I'm nervous about paying so much for a phone that will only last 2 years. Do i phones typically last longer than that?
Anything else I should know about them?
Thanks!
Re: Talk to me about i phones?
I will say that I love my iPhone (3GS). I've had it for about 1.5 years now, and other than wanting some of the features of the newer phones, I wouldn't think that I will *need* to upgrade when my 2 years is up. The phone still works perfectly. I think the iPhone 4 has been out long enough now that most of the big bugs have been worked out.
The things I wish I knew before buying...well, I guess I went into it knowing that there was a touch-screen keypad and that I'll never have Flash available to me. But those are both kinda annoying. DH has a Droid with a slide-up screen to reveal a real keyboard, and I really like that (but not enough to make me want a Droid!).
There is also a lack of customization that I find annoying...like I can set a calendar alert tone, but I can't change the sound of the tone. I don't know why Apple has made some things so difficult to change.
Another downside is the additional $30 per month you pay for the data plan.
But, all that said, the phone is so user-friendly and fast, and I would never want to go back. I love having access to my emails, calendar, internet, all my apps, GPS, etc.
I just got an iPhone 4 with Verizon for my bday in May and LURVE it!!! I had the 1st generation Droid before that. My Droid was getting wicked slow and the iPhone is so zippy compared to the Droid. The on-screen keyboard is much easier to use on the iPhone compared to the Droid, too. (I had the droid with the real keyboard as well as on-screen, but never used it.)
I agree w/ PP about the lack of customization, but on the other hand, it makes it very user friendly in that you don't have a million different options, etc.
Like any other smartphone, when using the apps/internet, the battery can go quick. Sometimes I can go 1.5 days without charging my cellie.
Verizon has a new tiered data plan system for smartphones which IMHO is silly. If you're setting up a new smartphone, they no longer offer the unlimited data plans. Annoying if you ask me, but they didn't, so....
All in all, I was addicted to my iPhone the instant I had it in my hands. I thought the Droid was the cat's meow, but my iPhone is now my baby. If you can swing it, I'd say go for it!
DH and I got Motorola Droids in March of last year. I really wanted an iPhone but they weren't available for Verizon yet. It's going to sound retarded but moving from a basic phone to a smartphone was life-changing, and I feel like regardless of which (decently popular) smartphone you get, you will be thrilled. That said, there was some bugginess in a number of the apps on the Motorola Droid and it didn't have some of the apps I wanted that only had iPhone versions. I was convinced that the iPhone and its apps would be much better and less buggy. For Valentine's Day this year DH surprised me with the iPhone 4 that had just come out for Verizon despite my perfectly good Droid.
Do I love my iPhone more than I loved my Droid? Yes. Are there more apps/all I could ever want? Yes. Do I feel like the phone and built-in functionality is much more intuitive and just downright better? Yes. For example, instead of calling in to check voicemail it shows up in your Voicemail tab as an audio file and you just tap to listen. It's a small thing, maybe, but it's an example of one of the ways the iPhone makes things more convenient and intuitive.
HOWEVER, one thing I didn't expect is that I was wrong that major apps (e.g. Facebook, Pandora) would be nearly perfect on the iPhone. On both iPhone and Droid there is definitely some functionality that acts wonky/buggy and they aren't immune to crashing. However, I do feel iPhones apps are far more polished.
I have no idea how long they last. But a number of my friends have fairly old iPhones so I doubt that's a big problem.
As a complete aside, I still have my Motorola Droid and it is in excellent condition (I had a sturdy case over it the whole time) and there is nothing wrong with it. If you and your DH didn't want to cough up hundreds for a smartphone, I could send you mine and the only thing you'd pay for is the monthly data plan (which you must do anyway). Just an offer.
* As a side note, because this post isn't long enough, most of the apps I was missing out on back when I had my Droid are there now. The "less apps" Droid issue is much less of an issue now that it's been around a while and they are pumping out new phones.
Women don't want to hear what men think,
women want to hear what they think, in a deeper voice
I have an iPhone and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I know this sounds totally insane, but it changed my life. It's made a lot of things a lot easier and more convenient for me, both work-wise and personally. I find it to be really really user-friendly and intuitive, much more so than other phones I've looked at and used (including other smart phones). As much as Apple pisses me off sometimes, they really do know how to make good products. The support online and at the Apple stores is also very good if you ever have a problem. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they got an iPhone and didn't like it.
I have the 3G iPhone (which is only one step up from the original - pretty old). So, my experience is different than the one you would have if you went out and bought an iPhone 4 today (which is much snazzier and faster.) I sometimes have trouble with my phone freezing up and being slow but that's a function of it being an older model and not really capable of handling the latest operating system. Not something you need to worry about - just what I got in my hand-me-down phone
I can't tell you much about cost because I have a family member who works for AT&T and I get everything for free through him (I'm seriously spoiled). But from what I hear, the monthly cost is high, especially now with the data plans.
As far as AT&T vs. Verizon: I know a lot of people hate AT&T and say their service is crap. I haven't had much trouble with that where I live and work but I recommend talking to people in your area about what service is like there for both companies. I stick with AT&T because it's free for me, obviously, but also because there are some limits to the multitasking you can do on your phone with a Verizon iPhone because of the type of network they have (different technology than AT&T).
Overall though, I really really love my iPhone and highly recommend it.
We have Sprint (ATT coverage was crap for me and Sprint gave us a really good deal) and DH and I both went from nothing ("don't text me, I don't get them") to smart phones and it has been life changing. I got a Blackberry Curve which I'm VERY happy with. DH got a Samsung Moment and it's crap...I can't reliably unlock it, it' freezes to the point you have to take out the battery, battery life is non-existent...but all that was in the reviews (he just wanted a touch screen and overlooked everything else)
OK, I'm glad I'm not the only one who said that
Thanks for the input! T said last night that he might like to get one so we are definitely going to look into it tonight. I think he secretly wants to be able to check his fantasy teams when we're out on the road.
Thank you so much! That's awesome of you...we're going to check out phones tonight but I may take you up on this. I'm kind of excited about an i phone now though. Wicked nesties.
Knowing T, I don't think that's a big secret
A late post!
I never wanted an iPhone. I am not an apple, i am a PC. But DH got one when his smartphone died a rather funny long death. He'll never get a blackberry again. Once he had one, it was over. I WANTED one. And while I am still a PC, I am now more of an apple and I love my phone.
One of the things I really like about it is that the camera and the video are pretty decent. So it has been a great way to take and send photos of Cedra to both MIL and my mom and DH for that matter. He has taken to 1 minute videos of her nearly every day to catalog her growing, and he takes pictures of his meals that he creates for his blog (that he hasn't started yet).
So, I was sold. It was also a godsend in the L&D listening to Car Talk and Wait Wait don't Tell me on NPR podcasts.
All right ladies, you talked me into it. I'm playing with my iphone as we speak! They told us that the $29 a month unlimited data package was ending tomorrow and they were going to the tiered system but we're grandfathered in which is exciting. I love it.
Thanks for all of the input!
