Wilmington beach recommendations?

Hi ladies!

My family is hoping to take a mini-vacation to Wilmington.  We've never been there, but are super excited to visit!  I've been reading a bit on the visitors site about Carolina, Wrightsville and Kure, but what do you recommend?  Its myself, my husband, and our toddler, and we will probably go down for a few days mid-week.  What beach is the most family friendly, low key, yet not too crowded?

Also, what hotels do you like?  I was looking into the Hampton Inn in Wrightsville and was bummed to find out its 2 miles from the beach and from what I hear its pretty expensive to park at the beach...

 Thanks!

Re: Wilmington beach recommendations?

  • I don't have any hotel recommendations because we usually just go for the day, but you will love Wilmington.

We usually have an easier and cheaper time finding parking at Carolina Beach.  It seems to generally be a little less crowded.  We went to Wrightsville a couple weeks ago and it took us awhile to find parking.  Most of the lots were $20...we found one for $10.  I know that last year there were meters further up the beach and they were $10/day and you could use your credit card.  We were with friends when we went a couple weeks ago and they insisted upon a certain area so that may have been why it was so expensive.

  • Here's my input, I do not have kids, but all those places are family friendly! I have been to all of the above beaches, Wrightsville is going to be the most crowded. Carolina Beach and Kure Beach are pretty similar, just a little further from Wrightsville, but really easy to get to. Most recently,  my husband and I stayed at the Golden Sands Motel in Kure Beach, which I would recommend if you want somewhere affordable, right on the beach. They have a small pool, a restaurant, and their own private pier with a tiki bar! That was a main reason I chose it! We went in April for Easter weekend, and it was pretty nice. Don't expect a really quaint town or anything, Kure and Carolina Beach are a little run down in my opinion. Wilmington is a nice little city, has a nice downtown area.  But if you're looking for somewhere family friends, affordable, not crowded, try Carolina or Kure!

Also, if you're looking for a break from the beach for a day, I would highly recommend the Fort Fisher aquarium nearby- great aquarium for kids and adults!

  •  Ah, so sorry, just looked at the website again- Golden Sands Motel is in Carolina Beach, I get them mixed up, they are so similar!

BTW- Parking wasn't an issue- there is plenty of parking at that hotel, included in price of hotel. And right on the beach!

  • Thanks, everyone!  It looks like Caroline/Kure is the way to go.  I am going to check out the aquarium too (and the tiki bar!).

    Thanks again!

  • My parents own a condo at Carolina Beach and my DH and I were just there for the 4th of July! If you go to Carolina Beach, you should try Squiggley's Ice Cream (it's a little pricey and get there early because it's very popular), Brit's doughnuts are fantastic and they are not that expensive at all (get there around 8-8:30 to get fresh, hot doughnuts), if you want to do a day trip to another island, check out Bald Head Island, you have to take two ferry rides to get there, but it is a beautiful, exclusive little island, where you can rent bikes/kayaks, golf carts and check out the island.  There is also a lighthouse called Old Baldy, that is a must see!
