Fingerlakes

Hi. I am not sure if I have the right area or not for New York. I am looking to come up to the fingerlakes for a girls weekend. I was wondering what area was the best to stay at - as far as lake wise. And do you have any favorite wineries up there? Thanks so much.

Re: Fingerlakes

  • DH and I stayed on Seneca Lake and had a great time. The wineries were all just a few miles apart. Unfortunately, I did not like where we stayed at all. It was a small B and B. I would like to stay at either Glenora or Belhurst if we return to that lake. GL!

I love them all, but Seneca Lake would be fun for a girls' weekend. We've stayed at rental cottages, but there are hotels in Watkins Glen or as pp mentioned you could stay at Belhurst and include some spa treatments.

  • There are great wineries on each lake.  Some of my favorites:

Seneca Lake: Fox Run, Glenora, Fulkerson, Wagner, and Hazlitt.  Belhurst is beautiful, if $$, and has decent wine also.

Keuka Lake: Dr. Frank's, Ravines, Keuka Overlook (run by a crazy old hippie), MCGregor

Cayuga Lake:  Hosmer, Knapp, Swedish Hill, Thirsty Owl

Definitely check out http://www.fingerlakeswinecountry.com/ for more information, they have maps and listings of places to stay.  I hope you have a great time!

  • I can't help you on where to stay since I've always stayed with friends when I go to that area but I really like Hazlit's and Bully Hill.  They are really fun wineries!  There's a lot of other good ones out there - I don't think there's really a bad winery out there.
  • I'm a little biased... I just got married at Glenora a few weeks ago, but I think it is the best place to stay on Seneca Lake.  Right smack in the middle of wine country.

There are also, as PPs mentioned, a ton of B&Bs around the lake... the only one I know by name is the Pearl of Seneca Lake.  Some of my family stayed there for the wedding weekend and loved it!

  • Visit Canandaigua for a small city atmosphere with good shopping and not far from several wineries plus the New York Culinary and Wine Institute is there.  The Canandaigua Inn on the lake is a great place to stay and enjoy good food.
