Cookies on a Stick

Mere's birthday party is Minnie Mouse themed (her choice---the girl knows what she wants!). I'm thinking of doing Minnie Mouse cookies on a stick. Anyone have any tips for me? What size sticks- 4 1/2" or 6"? Paper or plastic sticks? Horror stories? Lessons learned?

This is what I'm thinking, but on stick so I can display them.  [edit- I can't get the picture to show. Click the link.]

  • No idea but those are ADORABLE!

  • I have never made cookies on a stick, but I have made those cake ball thingies on a stick.  I used more of a cardboard like stick - think of dum-dum sucker sticks.  I purchased them at Hobby Lobby.

My only suggestion is to make sure your cookie is thick enough, so when you put the stick in, it doesn't crack the cookie and come out the back (if that makes sense).

Those are very cute cookies, BTW!  I can't wait to see the finished product!

I'm excited. I made her Hungry Caterpillar cake last year so I'm fairly certain I can handle cookies, but sticks throw me off :) I plan on doing my great grandma's sour cream cookie recipe (it's more cake like- refrigerated for 3 hours at least, roll out semi-thick). I saw another blog that used sugar-y black sprinkle things that made them sparkle! So many decisions!

  • I asked our resident cookie baker at work and she's never baked cookies on a stick before but did say that black frosting has bad taste and stains teeth :-).  PS, cute theme.  I"ll keep my eyes open for anything I see on pinterest...
  • Mostly am a lurker due to lack of time, but I can help here! Big Smile

I've done many cookie bouquets, some better than others. I use bamboo skewers (they're near the grilling section of the store usually). I use those instead of paper mostly because I trust wood in the oven more than paper or plastic in the oven. You need to insert the stick before you bake otherwise it's impossible to get in.

PP was right when she said to make sure the cookie is thick enough for the stick. I've had more than a few that have cracked or the stick came out the back. Also beware of the size of the cookie. I tend to get ambitious and make cookies that are too heavy for the stick. If it feels like it's going to be heavy, add another stick.

I usually bake the cookies a couple of minutes longer than I would if they were not on sticks. A soft cookie falls off the stick.

Another thing I figured out with time -- grease/butter the pan. When I make regular cookies, I don't worry about it as much, but cookies on sticks need a more delicate touch and a greased pan is much easier to get them off from.

Let me know if you can't see them, and I can try and post pics when I get home tonight.

Good luck! It's a lot of fun!

    CUTE!!!!

  • CUTE COOKIES! Thanks for the help. I bought sticks today at Hobby Lobby. I'm going to try the paper ones (since that's what I bought) but I'll rethink if my cookies fall off. Tigers, maybe I'll forgo black and do hot pink. Hmm... That would be less decorating for me since I was going to do black with a hot pink bow. Skip the black means skip the bow.... I like how you think ;)
