car recs needed

As you may have seen on FB, my car is sick :-(  It needs about $1500 worth of repairs, but it's barely worth that much.  Our mechanic has offered to buy the car from us for a few hundred.  So now we're thinking of getting me a new car.  We made the last payment on John's car last month, so it wouldn't be a new expense really.

So...back to my original question...what kind of car do you have and do you like it?  4 door is a must have!  TIA!

    Im sorry about your car!

I have a 1997 Audi A4 and like it (my Mom loves it and drives it more than I do, LOL!).  Im sure this doesnt help you much though.

But, my Dad is a mechanic and has always said hondas and toyotas are good long lasting cars (and easy to fix when there is a problem which is seldom).

I dont know if you would want a truck, but GM has an overabundance of their trucks right now, you might be able to get a good deal:  http://www.freep.com/article/20110706/BUSINESS01/107060348/Lots-GM-trucks-lots

Have fun and good luck car shopping.

  • My IL's both have Honda's and love them. I know a few other people with Honda SUVs and they love them too.

Not sure if you want to go used but I just got a 2007 Chrysler Pacifica Touring and I AM IN LOVE with it. I think it is technically a crossover. It was fully loaded (leather, dvd, navigation, back up cameras) and it has a third row which I love.

DH had a Jetta before he got his SUV and he had it for years and wore it to the ground.

  • We have an 04 Nissan Altima, and we've been very impressed with it! It's been a great car with very little problems, even though we live over a mile down a gravel road.

We also have an 08 GMC Acadia that we just got a few months ago, and I'm in LOVE with it. It doesn't have leather seats :-(, but it does have a DVD player, back up sensors, Bose sound system, remote start, etc. It also has two captains chairs for the middle row and a bench third row that folds down flat. I love, love, love it.

We bought both of our vehicles used. That's the only way we buy them. Big Smile

Oh yeah, DH has an '83 Chevy truck....lol I don't think that's what you had in mind though.

  • DH and I both have a Toyota Corolla and love them. Knock on wood, my car is 6 years old and this year was the first time I really had to put money into it (New rear shocks) - which really isn't much more than routine maintenance. DH bought his car used and we haven't had any issues with it either. The inlaws have a VW Passat and love it.
  • I have a 2010 Honda CRV and I LOVE IT! It's considered a compact SUB, so It has the 'feel' of an SUV in the space department, but handles more like a car (much better than my old Jeep Cherokee!). 4-door with a very roomy backseat and good sized cargo area in the back. Some of the best safety ratings out (for the 2010 model anyway, I don't know if they changed anything for the 2011s) and our previous experience with DH's Honda sold us on it!

  • I have a 2008 Honda CRV and like Kellie I LOVE IT. Mine has leather seats and a sun roof. I do wish I would have spent a little more and gotten the GPS system, but oh well. It doesn't have a DVD player or anything but you can always buy those ones you put over your seat.

I like the way it drives and I don't feel like I am driving a SUV. I get great gas mileage, I usually only have to fill it up about every 1 1/2-2 weeks. When I take it on the road for traveling I can go about 350 or so miles before I have to fill up, which I like.

  • I have a 2007 Nissan Sentra and so far (knock on wood), it's been really good to me. DH has a 2009 Pontiac Vibe (exactly the same as a Toyota Matrix) just with the Pontiac name and he did extensive research before buying it and that's what he settled on. It's a hatchback and has lots of room when the seats are down to carry things. He was looking at the CRV but it was a bit out of the price range he wanted to buy in.
  • Our house is like a car lot...

I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu that I bought when I turned 18. It had 6,000 miles on it when I bought it but it is loaded with leather, sunroof right now it has 127,000 miles on it and we are having a few problems with it. And if we get find a good deal on another car/SUV we are getting that.

TT has a 2002 Chevy Cavalier he just bought this car a year ago to drive back and forth to work because it gets good gas mileage. And here lately we have been taking his car on any trips we take.

We have a 2002 Chevy Silverado that TT bought about 7 years ago. It is lifted and gets horrible gas mileage hence why we got the cavalier.

And we have a 90 something Ford Ranger. It was TTs old truck that he gave to his grandfather when he got the new truck and when he his grandfather passed away TT's nasty, redneck stepsister started driving it. It was a huge ordeal bc she was not to drive it and she secretly made copies of the key and while it was parked at his dad's house she would drive it and bring it back before they got home from work. We finally found out about it because I saw her driving in town. So his dad asked if we could take it back.

Those are not much help BUT I am not sure what you are looking for but I am looking at the Chevy Equinox they get really good gas mileage for a SUV (better than my car) and I love the way they look and drive.

  • I have a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe and I love it! If you want a car instead of an SUV, my parents have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata and it has been an incredible car for them. (We really like Hyundai right now, and so does Consumer Reports)

  • Thanks for all the feedback!

We're going to look at cars today.  I'm leaning towards a car, but I'm also interested in small suvs.  John drives an explorer, but I don't want something that big.

Wish us luck!  I'll be back tonight to update you ladies!

  • Good luck! Let us know how it goes!!

  • I have an Explorer and I find with the stroller and groceries and anything else I'm toting around, it's perfect.  I can't imagine driving anything smaller.  You can't really go by me, though, because I'm used to bigger vehicles now.  I had a 2 door Explorer before this and felt cramped.  Rob has a 4 door F-150, which is big too, so I guess I'm used to that size.
