Hello All,
My Husband and I just found out today that his orders have changed. We are now going to Ft. Campbell. I was wondering if there is anyone on here who can give me some advice on the area (Like good areas to live, Good utility companies, entertainment, and so on). Thanks all!
Re: Ft Campbell Info
Hi there, we are actually leaving Campbell next week and headed to Lewis. We were only here eight months so I am by no means an expert but I will give you some advice for what you are looking for. Warning: this may be information overload!
The main communities people live off post are Hopkinsville, KY; Oak Grove, KY; and Clarksville, TN. We live in Clarksville. Exit 1 is closest to post and offers the most affordable housing. Most houses in this area are less than 2000 square feet (I don't know if you have kids, dogs, lots of furniture, etc). In May I found out there were a number of break ins in this area, mainly people taking flat screen TVs (I found this out while receiving a speeding ticket). There has been no violent crime that I am aware of but thought you may want to know that. Most homes located near Exit 1 are about a 10-15 minute drive to post.
Exit 4 of Wilma Rudolph is where most of the shopping is, the mall, Walmart, chain restaurants, pretty much anything you need. There is not a ton of housing in this area, however there is a really nice subdivision located off the beaten path of Exit 4 somewhat near the hospital called Hickory Wild and the homes are beautiful and they are still building the development.
Exit 11 has the nicest and biggest homes and I was told the best school system, Sango. We don't have kids but I was a nanny while we were here and the family I worked for sent their daughter to St. Mary's preschool near downtown, which is said to be the best preschool in town. Homes near Exit 11 usually are more than the other areas but they are gorgeous.
Be prepared to shell out some dough for utility deposits here. We moved here on Thanksgiving day (we had two days to get here) and had to pay "Emergency Connection" fees the day after since everything was closed and our realtor forgot the utilities were off. We paid around $600 in utility deposits with great credit. Consider that probably half of that was emergency connection fees but still the gas and water deposit was rediculous and they do not do credit checks (like to waive the deposit). For cable, we have AT&T UVerse and absolutely love it. I am devastated they don't offer it in Washington.
As far as entertainment goes, our favorite, favorite restaurant is Blackhorse Pizza & Brewery on Franklin Street. Food is amazing and their beer is really good too! You have to try the beer cheese dip and BBQ Chicken Pizza. Beachaven Winery has "Jazz on the Lawn" during the summer about every other weekend which is pretty fun. The riverwalk is cool to take a stroll or walk the dog. Ft. Campbell is very family oriented and Clarksville seems to have followed suit. The only other place I've been is Rucker which had dozens of bars and clubs in Enterprise and Dothan. Campbell is not like that. If you are into that, there is a bar off of Exit 1 called O'Connor's which I recently discovered, and really liked. They have a sand volleyball court and cornhole sets in the back with a tiki bar and it's a good place to go to watch sporting events. Also, we just got a Buffalo Wild Wings! Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. Hope this helped and have a safe move! :-)
Don't move to Hopkinsville. Just don't. Ick, eww, no. Plus there is nothing out there, absolutely nothing.
I lived in Oak Grove. We just rented a little house out there and life was good. I think if you're somewhat lower to mid-enlisted, Oak Grove would be your best bet. I know it's not much of a town but there's a bunch of little subdivisions behind the Oak Grove Wally World. You're going to want to shop at that walmart anyway as sales tax is lower in KY than TN so you'll save a bit vs shopping at the Wallyworld on Wilma Rudolph.
However, if you're upper enlisted or officer, then exit 11 is probably where you want to look.
Depending on where you're from, Clarksville is honestly pretty meh. The mall is absymally tiny and there isn't a lot of variety for shopping or much in the way of entertainment. We regularly did day trips to Nashville just to get out of the place, do some real mall meandering and other stuff with the kids. It's only a 45 minute drive so it didn't bother me at all. We usually went every other month or so.
That being said, my kids were preschool aged then so I have no idea how the schools are or what there is to do in Clarksville for school aged kids if you need that. They certainly seemed nice enough but again, what do I know?
I can't remember the name of the road but it connects 41A and Wilma Rudoph. If I were you, I would not rent anything that depended on that crackass narrow road to get back and forth on post. It's horrible to drive on in the rain or the snow and it's slows to a busted ass crawl during peak times, forget about bad weather.
I suppose I should have said this from the first but I haven't lived there in four years. Maybe things have changed but I kind of doubt it. Try to schedule your grocery trips for between paydays as the commissary is tight and cramped. Ft Campbell is anal about stickers, insurance, registration etc and they do vehicle inspections before every three day weekend. Campbell is also ridiculously anal about appearance, haircuts, and uniform maintenence. While this kind of goes without saying in the military, Campbell takes it to a whole new level. I'm not even playing. They are more up in your personal business even if you live off post than any military installation I've been to before or since.
If you have any questions, ask away or I'll post if I think of more.

I forgot to mention that about the sales tax...Clarksville is 9.5% and Kentucky I believe is 6.0-6.5%. I grocery shop weekly and found that without a doubt, the best prices are at the commissary plus the added bonus of being tax free, however I always end up going on the on or right after pay day and it is so packed I swear I will never go back. Plus Kroger is a lot closer for us but way more expensive. They are supposed to be opening the new commissary this fall I believe and it looks a lot bigger than the current one.
Also agreed about Campbell being anal about things. We were previously guard and our orders came sooner than we had expected and we had two days to move here. I still have my guard dependent ID which is a lovely shade of reddish pink and every time I go on post they stare at it for days and ask me what it is. I explain it and then they tell me I need a new one, even with a DoD sticker. Also, my car is registered to my dad who lives in NY and has a different last name since I'm married and we had to jump through some hoops to even get a sticker. We are in the process of switching over the title but just be aware they are a little crazy here. There are some cool things to do around the area just do a little research! Ditto on Nashville trips too, one of the coolest cities I've been too! Good luck! :-)
Campbell wouldn't even give me a sticker for my car when my dad's expired. (retired Navy) I had to stand in line will all the proper documentation and get a two day pass every.single.time I needed to get on post.
However, I live near Hunter. The sticker my father got me when he came to visit at Campbell expired in December. The times they noticed the sticker was expired, they allow me on post just from showing the gate guard by military ID, current registration and insurance. It's the same security company. Bases are just strange on implementation.
