Tax and title on a new car...any estimates?

The most expensive I am looking at is the 2012 Focus hatchback (around $20k). Does anyone know what taxes and title generally are at a dealer?

When I registered my current car it was only $500ish, but it is an older car.

I just want an idea of a dollar amount so I can budget a little better. I may have to get a different car if it is going to be a lot...

TIA

Re: Tax and title on a new car...any estimates?

  • I just bought a new car two weeks ago. With a selling price of $22000, the taxes were $1321 and tag/title was $208.

However, I think on July 1st the MVA tag/title fees increased by about double. Hope this helps.

  • OMG tell me you are kidding about the double fee. FVUCK. Seriously?
  • I misread mine, it was $218 total. It broke down like this: Tags $148 Title $50 Lein $20. It is the title fee that increased to $100. The tags didn't increase.

  • Oh, but the dealer processing charge, which is usually around $100 (it was $99 for my new car, and $99 when I bought a new car in '06) can now be $200.

So you're paying a ton of money in fees either way. Ridiculous!

  • Yea and that doesn't include taxes...just the fees....hmmmmmm
  • About tax and title from carmax.com

    How fees are determined
Tax, title, and tags charges are based on five factors:

    1. The state where you live
    2. The county where the vehicle is registered
    3. The weight of the vehicle
    4. Whether you have a trade-in
    5. The type of license plate you choose

    For a $20K vehicle

Sales or use tax: 6% Excise Tax
    Title: $50
    Registration: $128 to $180
    Plate transfer: $10
Additional fees: Dealer processing charge $99 (not required by law)
    Total: $1,425 to $1,600
  • Yes. The fees have all doubled. Tax is 6%, title fee is $100, lien fee is $20 and tags are $128. Dealer proccessing is $200.
  • Also if you need help with a focus h works at a ford store. I think you have my email.
  • you have to pay sales tax on the price of the car so add 6% to whatever the purchase price is.  No clue what tag/title fee is.  I gladly pay it since I know that it goes too fund roadway improvements which keeps me with a job. :)

    ? Nope no e-mail.

Where do you live? I'm down closer to DC - just posted here to get some MD insight :)

  • Maybe to be safe I'll budget an extra 2k for fees, taxes, etc....just round it up, lol.
  • We are in harford county. Kind of a hike from you.
  • Yeah, we just bought this week and it's a bummer about the fee hike.  We were able to get the $100 dealer fee because it was still on their website that way.
