tr: introducing peanut butter

When introducing peanut butter to your kiddo, did you wait until 2 years?  Or later?

I seem to read a lot of mixed reviews and I'd like to hear what other overprotective, I mean well-informed, mom's think :)

Re: tr: introducing peanut butter

  • Dr. All-His said we could introduce it at 1 :o)  Natalie LOVES peanut butter, and it's usually one of the only things I can make her that I know she will eat.  As long as you don't have any allergies in your family, I say go for it.

  • We introduced at age 1 and many studies are starting to show that earlier introduction is fine if not better.

  • I don't even think we waited until 1. I just recently gave her actual pb on crackers or bread, but I am pretty sure she had some exposure to it by 9ish months in the form of a cookie her sister slipped her.  We don't have any history of food allergies, so I wasn't too concerned.  We waited until recently for actual pb b/c it is kind of hard to eat.

  • we've been giving pb since before O was one.  Never had problems.
  • I waited until one with both, but I have been reading that even earlier is fine, especially if there is no family history of nut allergies.

  • We introduced it at one. We gave a half-piece of pb toast, waited a few days just in case she was going to have a reaction. Then we introduced more gradually. Although, I think with pb there's an immediate reaction. We also did it during normal pedi hours, just in case ;-)

  • Around one. I was more concerned with her choking on it than I was about an allergy. The first time we gave it to her, we put it on toast so it got runny and wasn't as thick.

  • We introduced at 7 months and had no issues. We have no family history of any food allergies.

  • Not to be a Debbie Downer, but my girlfriend's little boy, well both sons actually, have nut allergies, and they don't have a history of these allergies in the family. I would do it slowly, and really watch his recation, I know Luke's is pretty fast acting. Like he breaks out in hives and you can just tell. So just be careful!
  • My husband and MIL are both allergic to peanuts. I have no idea the protocol when it comes to our LO. I will ask the pediatrician on Friday when we meet her and do the interview thing.
