I figured I would ask all of you experts for some help with what I should do. DS#1 JUST turned 18months and I am due with DS#2 in October. I was not planning on potty training DS#1 before #2 came, but recently he has been showing signs of readiness so I bought him a training seat. Then today, he went in the bathroom so we figured, why not let him try, and he did both all by himself. Then later today he was in the playroom and making his poop face so I took him to the potty and he went again! So...what are your tips...should I push this, or is this a fluke day and just let him keep taking his time?? Any good tips on making the process easier?
Re: Potty training help!
I would just go with what he shows you!
Just be prepared for regression after baby is born. Our DS1 was fully trained before our DD was born and he regressed terribly! They're about 3 years apart.
Just be willing to be flexible!
Good luck!
Ditto Patti. Follow his lead. I will tell you that DS went on the potty a ton right after we bought the seat. He was around 19 months. That lasted less than a week before the novelty wore off.
I'll tell you what's working for us. After he stopped initiating it, I kept offering every night before bath. If he said no, I didn't push it. If he went, he got tons of praise and hugs. I'd say he would go maybe 2-3 nights a week. He just wasn't ready. A little over a month ago (so just about 22.5 mo old) he got really interested in it. He wanted to go all the time. Now I take him every time I have to pee (which is a lot) and he goes 95% of the time. He almost exclusively poops in the potty now. I think I've changed 5 poopy diapers since the beginning of June. We don't punish for accidents or for going in his diaper, we just do extra praise for going on the potty. We've never given him treats but I don't expect him to be PT any time soon so we're still just following his lead.
GL!
