Re: furniture
to be honest, most of our furniture comes from ikea b/c our rooms are small & the typical furniture store's stuff just doesn't fit.
*however* i've found lots of fun things at Lucketts Antique Store (in Lucketts, VA just past leesburg). at their annual fair I found a vendor that made our dining room table (custom, out of reclaimed barn wood) which is destined to be a family heirloom it's so well-made. I like it b/c older furniture is scaled to smaller rooms too. some of the stuff is $$$ but there are also some good deals to be had...especially at the annual fair.
We got our sectional couch in March from Hamilton's. They have really good pieces and are easy to work with.
Our bed and dining room table are from Marlos. I recommend the Maryland store over the Alexandria one - better selection and salespeople.
We also got a few pieces recently from Value City as we have had good luck with them in the past on some items.
We went to a ton of furniture stores in the Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax area this spring most of whose names I cannot remember. A lot of them had really nice items, just not what we were looking for or at prices we wanted to pay.
i am a big fan of crate and barrel furniture. everything i've had (bookcases, desk, couch, and floor lamps) has been well made and worn well over the years.
not a west elm fan. their prices are similar to c&b but the quality is more like ikea. and i am an ikea fan but because they are affordable.
i loooove room & board but we're not buying any nice furniture until we know we aren't moving for awhile.
We got most of our stuff from Belfort, Macy's, and Desi Innovations in Pentagon City. All of the stuff we bought was high quality, and we were very pleased with our purchases.
As we've been slowly buying pieces, we've done a mix of Pottery Barn (which I love both the look and the quality of the items we've chosen) and antique or resale. We have a lot of Ikea mixed in that has proven really durable. Generally when we buy pieces we look at form, function and quality (materials, workmanship). We're in no rush to replace everything which has given us the opportunity to be selective about what we would like.
My parents bought all of their dining room and living room furniture at Ethan Allen and it is still beautiful. When they downsize, we are getting their dining set.
We bought our bedroom set from Furnitureland South in North Carolina, but I'm guessing you're not interested in making the trip down there (though they also do orders online and ship them).
We got our dining room set from Creative Classics in Alexandria, VA. We are very happy with it, and it cost a lot less than we were expecting. We've only had it for six months, so I can't speak to the durability, but it seems really well made!
We got our bedroom set from World Market, when they had their like 50 percent off sale. It has held up really, really well (for almost 3 years so far). They were great to deal with, but you kind of have to constantly recheck in with them, since their inventory changes so often.
We also just got a sectional couch from Value City, which the price was good, and the service was good, but it took awhile to get the couch in and there were a lot of miscommunications. We originally bought the couch on 5/30/11, they told us it would be in on 6/3/11. 4 days, no big deal. Then on Thursday, (6/2/11) they called and told us that it wouldn't be in until 6/29/11. Then randomly on 6/16/11 they called and told us that it wouldn't be in until 7/23/11. At that point, we were a little annoyed, because it was taking so long to come in...we complained, and they ended up giving us $50 off the couch, since they felt bad that we were mislead. Then on 6/29 they called and told us to come pick up our couch....
So far so good with new couch, and they have a really good replacement plan that covers just about anything, so that's kind of nice. Good lucK!

I was just about to bite the bullet to buy a grownup bedroom set and then saw that the Hemnes bed is only $149 now. We got a Hemnes dresser for LO and it is so nice and solid, so now I think we're going to do a Hemnes bedroom for us.
When is this annual fair? I want to get some antique stuff for the new house.
