Teaching and living in DC area

My cousin is 24, single and looking to move to the DC area and find her first teaching job.  She has worked at Disney World in the Animal Kingdom the past 2 years in educational positions.

Suggestions for school districts and places to live for easy commutes to those districts would be greatly appreciated.  I teach, but live in the 'burbs and she needs a move active, young area IMO, so I am at a loss for advice.

Re: Teaching and living in DC area

  • How aboiut a Teach for America type experience?  That way, she'd automatically be introduced to a group of people around her age, and would have a sense of camraderie (I'm sure I spelled that wrong...).
  • H's cousin moved here a couple of years ago when she was 24, single, and a teacher. She got a job in Fairfax County, and she lives in Clarendon. She's been extremely happy with both the job and the apartment.
  • My sister used to teach in Alexandria City Public Schools - at an elementary school - and loved her job/school/co-workers. She lived in DC and commuted (which was kind of long), and then moved to Old Town Alexandria and liked that must better.

I have quite a few friends that have done exactly this.  They have also worked in Fairfax and lived in Arlington.  I also know quite a few teachers who are 25-30 range that live and work in loudoun county schools, though a lot of them end up going to D.C. on the weekends, and either cab it home, or crash on a friends couch out there.
