Droid 2?
Anyone have one? Thoughts? Recs for some other smartphone with a slideout keyboard?
My phone seems to be possessed (thank goodness I don't need it much for the next three weeks!), so I am even more driven to get a new phone as soon as it's time to renew (August 3rd). I've decided to take the smartphone plunge, but most of them are touchscreen-only, and that was a disaster for my last phone. Not sure if it's a crappy phone or if I just have issues, but I don't want to risk it, especially on a super expensive phone.
The Droid 2 has decent reviews online, but like most things, there are lots of really good reviews, and plenty of terrible ones, so it's hard to judge what MY experience will be. For the money, I want to hear something from someone I 'know', and be able to ask some questions. Plus, three out of my last four phones were well-reviewed but were utter crap.
I may wind up with a touchscreen-only, because people keep telling me they don't have issues like I've experience with my phone (Chocolate Touch), plus there aren't many options. BUT NO IPHONE.
Re: Droid 2?
I've had the Droid 2 for about a year now. I went with the Droid 2 since I had been a Blackberry lover and still needed the keyboard (i suck at touchscreen keyboards). The Droid 2 is not without it's problems, but for what I need it for, I believe it works really well. I use my phone for work e-mails and calls, but since I've gotten the Droid 2 I've become very reliant on it's awesomeness.
Pros:
Droid OS is pretty intuitive and fun.
Allows for all sorts of apps and fun add ons
Slide out keyboard is ever so helpful for texts and e-mails
Cons:
Short Batterylife (it may last longer if you weren't inclined to use it for everything, like)
Bigger and Bulkier than some other smartphones
Since the app market is not regulated like Apple, some of the apps may cause your phone to freeze or have problems

I think Droid >> iPhone because of the flash capability.
I agree on the flash it's nice. I don't understand why Steve Jobs is in a tiff with Flash.
It seems like a pretty equal split between IPhone and the Droids. I'm just partial to the Google OS.
I have a Droid Incredible. I haven't had a problem with the touch screen and I love the phone. I've had it since November and I think it's only really frozen up on me once. I restarted it and it was fine. It's not as big as the Droid X, and it's not too heavy. The camera is pretty good and has a great flash.I love that it easily syncs up with my Google contacts and calendar. And after I got an app, I can also easily pull up anything I stored on Google Docs. I am clearly partial to Google (much like Apple fans).
I definitely charge it every night. Depending on how much I use the browser or apps during the day, I sometimes have to plug it in at work. Now that most phones have the mini (or is it micro) USB charger, I just plug it into my computer - I can use the same cable as my Kindle. So it's not a huge deal to me (except on those few occasions I will be out all day - get a car charger!).
The only thing I miss from my BlackBerry is BBM.
I have the X and it's touch screen, it's actually not too bad but took me a good week to get used to it. Toby has one too and with his man fingers he hasn't had any troubles either. Cons for mine are the same as Steph's and I do miss my bbm. :-)
The no flash thing on iphones is just plain ridiculous. Steve Jobs is trying to build his own Apple flash program to compete with Adobe's Flash. That's why it's not on the iphone. So silly. What is happening though, is flash is becoming obsolete. Not cause of Steve Jobs, but because designers are finding work arounds so that their sites work on all devices - building in a whole new language. We (our business) used to work in all flash, now we only use it if it's absolutely necessary. And that's rare.

I heart my iphone! I went the cheap why out and got the 3g for only $50. I had what I used to call my ghetto iphone, it was a touch screen and I hated it. I was anti touchscreen for a long time because of this. I decided to get an iphone anyway, I don't think I will get another type of phone for a long while.
I am trying to convince Greg to get one too so he can stop stealing mine to play angry birds.
I have a Droid Eris. It's made by HTC instead of Motorola, and I love it. I've read really bad reviews about Motorola brand Droids. My mom had one that was a complete POS and had to be replaced 3 times within 6 months. I have known several people with the HTC Droids that love them.
I wasn't a fan of the touch screen at first, but it's really grown on me. I don't have any problems now and actually prefer it to having a bigger, bulkier phone.
For those that miss BBM, there's a sort of similar app called What's App available to Iphone and Droids for free. It uses data instead of SMS to "text" people. If you download it and a friend has the same app you can chat back and forth with no additional charges.
It's been working well for my friends that have Iphones or use other carriers.
Thanks for all of your help, ladies! I want to play around with some phones in the store, and I'm not ruling out all-touch-screen entirely, I'm just a bit wary. Mine is very unresponsive and messed up, though it worked well for the first few months. And now it's changing the names on my contacts and dialing people on its own...so, yeah, that's fun. I will keep the HTC tip in mind - I've heard that before. I luckily already have compatible chargers (work, home, and car) for most phones.
