I love laying the hammer down

I get a sick pleasure out of disciplining people who truly, truly suck. I had a volunteer, who I wasn't so sure I liked anyway, stop showing up for shifts at the gift shop (which was a temporary assignment), not contact me back when I asked him for an update on his volunteer status, and then send me an email today (a month after I requested an update) asking me if he can start working with patients now. Um, no. So here's my email:

Normal 0 false false false /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;}

I expect you to let me know before the incident if you did not plan to keep coming in. I highly recommend you do not skip shifts at any job, paid or not, no matter how pointless you think they may be. It is also a good idea to respond to messages from your supervisor in a timely manner. The e-mail I sent to you a month ago requested an update, which I did not receive.

 Unfortunately, because of your unprofessionalism in regards to volunteering in the gift shop, I do not feel comfortable moving you to Acute. I cannot be sure that you will not grow bored of volunteering with the patients and stop showing up for shifts without notice.

 Thank you for the time that you did spend in the gift shop, and please let this be a lesson to you for future jobs and volunteer opportunities.

  • I wonder if he'll respond...I doubt it. Why are people like that?! I just don't get it.

    I'm glad you're not a flaky type that allows people to come back after being unprofessional like that - I've been in lots of situations where people aren't pulling their weight but keep coming back. Ugh.

  • I really dislike people like that.  As someone who worked at a hospital in a position that utilized a LOT of volunteers - it's super important to show up when scheduled.  We sort of depend on them to do different things.  We had some high school volunteers that were amazing and in fact one of them went to college and came home every other weekend on a greyhound bus just to volunteer (4 hour trip one-way).  That's dedication.

    Can you "fire" him or since he's not showing up anyway he pretty much already quit?
