Good morning,
I do not normally post but I am beginning to feel hopeless in my job search. I've been looking for a new job for about a year. I completed my B.A. program last December and aggressively started my search in January of this year. My boss is also aware of my job search because there is no growth opportunity here and they pay very little. I've sent my resume out to a few employers as well as agencies and have not received any call backs for an interview or anything.
A friend of mine revised my resume because she thought my previous one was not readible to the eye (her words). Still no call backs. I was also told by my husbands friend that my resume looks as though I am an executive (far from that)and should not be applying for entry level positions. I began applying for Executive Assistant positions but still not one call back. I asked a friend of mine if her HR person could look over my resume and tell me if I should fix anything. She said it was fine and it only looks as though I wear many hats in my current job (which I do), and that maybe in a large company they would not need that.
Sorry if I am talking to much but I do not know what to do. Any advice?
Re: Hopeless - no call backs after sending my resume
Make sure your cover letter is really great. I'm in the same position as you, except I just graduated in May.
I wasn't putting much into my cover letters to begin with, and I wasn't getting any call backs either. It seems like the more I've put into my cover letter, the more call backs I've gotten.
Your CL should be tailored to each job you apply for. If you applying for a job look at the description and then use those keywords in your cover letter. Also I think examples/ more direct descriptions will help. For example- What are great admin skills? How are you stressing your ability to multi-task?
Finding a job isn't easy these days and I'm sorry you are having a difficult time. It's good that you are activitily seeking feedback on your resume. I'd also visit your college's career services office for more assistance. As a recent grad, they can help you even more with your resume and offer job search assistance such as job fairs and networking opportunities.
Networking is also very important and most jobs that I have gotten have come through networking. I worked in career services at a university for a while and we used to tell students that only 20% of jobs come from sending in resumes. The rest are through networking.
Keep your head up and keep applying- something will come along eventually. Fingers crossed for you! GL!
I agree about putting work into your cover letter and that sometimes you have to add to it or take things out to make it fit for the jobs you are applying to.
Double check your resume for spelling errors and basic things like that as well.
