curtains question

so we have the typical vinyl roller shades in the nursery, like this:

Blindsgalore Reminiscent Vinyl Blackout roller shade shown in color Cream

But they do a good job of blocking out the light. I know for a baby's room you want to be able to make it dark. I want to have valances and panels made to match our crib skirt and bedding that a family friend is making...I'm wondering if it's possible to mount both the valance and the panels outside the window so I can keep the rollershades mounted inside to make it darker in the room if necessary...if so, what kind of rods/hardware do I buy?

Re: curtains question

  • Oh yes! You can get decorative rods at the Christmas tree shop, JC Penny, BBB, really anywhere... Or you can do simple hardware that they sell in hardware stores, they are usually white and clip into brackets, really easy to install, and depending on how you want to have the curtains styled.

  • I don't know about your curtain question but a friend of mine put a tinted film (similuar to car tint) in their nursery. It blocks out the sun a little and you can peel it off when you are finished with it.

  • Like Sam said, any of those places will have double curtain rods that mount on the outside.

ETA: We have room darkening shades mounted on the inside of our bedroom windows and the curtains on the outside (but not valences).

  • yes - fwiw, i think its a good idea to let some light in the babies room at least sometimes (when sleeping) so they retain the ability to sleep without pitch blackness!

This and a word of advice - I don't know what you are doing for panels. (I think you said panels) but you may not want them to go to the floor if you are thinking of that. Baby will try and pull up on them and possibly pull the rod out of the wall and hurt themselves.

OOOH! Good thinking Paige...I was thinking like an inch or two below the window sill but the windows are not that high...hmmm. Our roller shades are not like blackout curtains, but the windows face west and get major sun in the afternoon - so I would want to block light/heat when required...it would not be dark dark, but it gets super bright in there from like 2-5pm.
