Good hip hop dance classes in Memorial-ish area?

I used to take/be a dance team member at Planet Funk, and I love it and will always have loyalty there...but it's just too far for me to drive and I really want to start dancing again on a weekly basis at least.

I know there are a couple of studios out in this area and I'm going to check out two (Houston Academy of Dance and Memorial Dance Center, but wanted to see if anyone has any recs.

It doesn't HAVE to be in the actual Memorial area, but I don't want to have to drive 20 minutes to get to a studio if possible.

Thanks!

Re: Good hip hop dance classes in Memorial-ish area?

  • A friend of mine dances for a Houston sports team and this was her response...

The main place I take Hip Hop and all dance classes for years is the Houston Metropolitan Dance Center. It is located in the Medical/Museum district. Other dance studios that are closer and good for hip hop would be So Real and Soundbox Studios (their crew just won America?s Best Dance Crew).

  • What the PP said.  So Real and Soundbox.
  • Fay ~ I've taken at the Met before and LOVED it.  I thought about taking there but wanted to see if I could get something closer.

Thanks to both of you for the recs!  And wouldn't you know, in my endless internet searching for hip hop classes, NEITHER of those showed up??  Grrrr.

Butting in: F is "trying out" for the Met in the fall.  We can walk there from my house, so I hope she "makes it"  lol

Glad to hear good things about it!

That is SUPER cute!!!  Hope she makes it :)   It's a great studio and VERY well respected around Houston.  I took from them several times when I was in high school for my studio's dance team, and then again just on my own in college/law school.

If I still lived in Pearland, it actually would be super close to me b/c I could just hop on 288 and zip to the Museum District to get there.

There are some dance studios out here, but I don't really jive with the type of hip hop most places teach (especially dance studios that are more focused on ballet/tap/jazz).  I need real, street hip hop, not fluffy stuff.  SO glad to know about Soundbox and SoReal.  I think I'm going to try out SoReal.  Neither of them are particularly close, but they're within 20 minutes, so that's not bad.

PAGAS- what do you mean by "trying out"?  which class is she going for?

M started there in january, but there was no trying out process.

The trying out is because she won't be three until November, but since she already has a year of dance done at Kings (they let her start when she was one year old), they said they would let her "try out."  I put it in quotes because it is so silly!  I really would like to start her there since it is so close, but F's late birthday is a hindrance since they don't start kids until three.

that *is* silly!  so she'll just be a few months shy at the start of the semester?

it had crossed my mind that you might have F in dance there since it's in your 'hood, but when the topic of heavy makeup for recitals came up, i figured it was a different school!

fwiw, we've been very happy there... M loves it!
