  • Was that the famine post? Because holy. sweet. jeebus.  I become more and more convinced that Idiocracy is a vision of our not-too-distant future.

  • I have it.

I just dont understand why western countries need to continue to send food, water, medicine etc but birth control is a no no.  Famine happens every year in Africa so this is no shock..only the extreme nature this year. But with the average sub-Saharan family having 6 children and no means to caring for them is mind boggling to me. 1-3 is the average here is western countries, why is there no cap placed on these parents to keep the starving numbers down. And the population increase is just getting worse over there.

    Gardencrazy:

I had a professor wisely say "Education is the best form of birth control."  Meaning the more educated people are, the less children they tend to have.

I also don't agree with providing food and aid to poor countries. It takes away the incentive to work (why work when you can stand in line and get all your basic needs met), and takes away from the profits of those who do work (why pay for something you can get for free).  But too many people don't think it through and simply think that by throwing cash (or in this case, food) at the problem, that will resolve it.

If there is someone in need that I know -- and know all of the circumstances surrounding the problem, I am happy to help out. But when it comes to other cultures, too many people think that other cultures have similar values and ideals, and don't understand that they are often making the problem worse even though they have good intentions of helping the poor and needy.

    KozieKim:

Being a mom I just cant comprehend have 2 starving children and then declaring to want to have 4 more. I read large families are a requirement for marriage agreements. To the hell with that. I would only need one suffering child to know what is the right thing to do.  I haven't been on birth control since I was 17 (was only on it to regulate periods) and I never got pregnant.  So I dont think being on birth control is the only answer. Granted there is nothing they can do to bring food to the table but they can keep from bringing more kids to the table! And yes I did go to 4th grade and know all my continents. LOL

    OMG the stupidity.

  • Wow. There are no words.

I spent summers '04 and '05 in Honduras building houses. You can not describe being in a third world country until you've been...  But the ignorance and lack of compassion in that thread is astounding.

And I will never forget that picture.

    Ever.

I know, I had never seen it before today, though it's apparently pretty old. It's a photo that will never leave those who see it.

I believe I read that the photographer committed suicide shortly after that photo was taken.

With that said, if you lurk on Oct 2011 babies board, there is even more sh!t on this topic.

  • I'd only heard this post mentioned but had not read any of it.  Based on the context of people's reactions, I decided not to waste my time reading it because I have no patience for stupid.

But I just looked at that picture and...I truly have no words.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

I saw the post briefly as I was leaving work yesterday but it was DDd by the time I got back to it. I can't believe how ignorant people are (well, I can, but it still makes me slam my head against my desk). Ugh.
