How long to keep past bills...
I've got a quick question about keeping past bills... how long do you keep them for?? I've searched all over the Net and can't find a solid answer... maybe you ladies can help me out...
Thanks!
Re: How long to keep past bills...
Don't keep them at all.
Sign up for e-billing or auto pay and you won't even have to get them in the mail.
If you absolutely have to get the bill in the mail, keep it until it's paid and then shred it.
You can get 12 months (at least) of any bill you need on the company's website.
I'm one of those people who needs the security (and reminder!) of getting a paper bill sent to me. So like a PP said, I keep them until the next bill comes and shows that I have paid it. After that, I shred it.
I use one of these organizers to keep track of when each bill is due (and I use an index card with a written reminder for those that are automatically deducted from my account). Also, I use it for wedding/party/shower invitations. It's great for me, because I like to keep the invitations for directions, etc. until I need them. This way, I don't lose them in my purse/car/desk/etc.

Well I guess I'm old fashion. I still keep paper bills in the filling cabinet. I do pay them online, but then I write 'paid', the date, and the confirmation number on the outside of the envelope and keep them in their separate folders (one for cable, one for water/sewer, ect) in the cabinet for about 3-4 months.
I don't keep the credit card bill.....we only have one and its paid off in full every month. We keep track of that online.
I file everything in it's own folder (cellular, electric, etc..) and once a year, some time after tax time i go through all my folders and shred old info from the year, at least as far as bills such as utilities go.
and i know , i know paper bills, but hubby is the worst budget-er, and since the wedding we are transitioning into me taking over the budget, something that hasn't been easy let me tell you!

I"m with nikkilynn, esp. with our elec bill, because I keep track of it on our elec meter, so I have this months, last months, and I call them the day that they read it, to see what number they got, but that is our only bill that fluctuates really, and I only do that because they have tried charging us wrong in the past, and the elec bill is crazy anyway where i live
