Speaking of linens, how long do you expect comforters/quilts to last?
So I am cleaning out our linen closet and trying to figure out what to purge (besides the musty sheets). We have a quilt from Crate and Barrel that we got for our wedding 5 years ago. I loved it at the time, and still like it a lot, but it is definitely worse for the wear. It is a mostly white background with colorful blocks on it, and the white has yellowed a bit. I've sun-bleached it, used oxy clean, vinegar, borax, blueing, and it just doesn't look nice and crisp anymore.
I hate to get rid of it but I don't think it looks very nice anymore.
How long do you expect comforters/quilts/duvet covers to last?
Re: Speaking of linens, how long do you expect comforters/quilts to last?
All of ours have lasted longer than i've liked the pattern
Our guest bedroom comforter from Walmart is still in great shape and is 6 years old. Granted, it doesn't get used as much anymore, but we had it on our bed for 4 years.
Our linen closet is full of duvet covers, there are about 6 in there, all in almost perfect condition, ranging from 2-10 years old. We do have 1 white one that isn't crisp white anymore, but it's not too bad, and again, it's probably 7 years old.
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
I've found quilts, duvet covers & comforters with large blocks of white in them just don't quite stand the test of time. They just get kind of dingy & I too have not found a way to make them look fresh again.
In your case, i'd keep the quilt but use it in the winter underneath your duvet cover/comforter/quilt.
We had a duvet that was almost solid white (small border of embroidery) and it lasted less than 2 years.
The heavier, damask gray duvet cover we have is 2 years old and looks great, my husband just thinks it is too hot for summer use.
We just bought a new comforter because ours wasn't as fluffy as we wanted it after 5 years.
The quilts I have are all quilts I have made, save for 1 Laura Ashley quilt, and they're all in great condition. I got the LA quilt for my 5th birthday- so it is 21 years old. We graduated from college and as a graduation gift to my husband I did his college shirts quilt- I sleep with it every night and it is in great condition.
Stand up for something you believe in.
sorry if this is a dumb question, but have you tried dry cleaning it?
We have a lightweight quilt that we use for summer and a heavy comforter that we use for winter and I get each one dry cleaned at the end of the season and they have held up well and look pretty new (although neither one are white).
