Are you taking the baseboards off the wall to paint them or leaving them on? Our baseboards look pretty bad from the people who lived there before us not taping them off when they painted, so we would like to take on the project of painting all of them, but I'm not sure of the best way to go about it.

Oh and I feel you on all the painting. That's all we did last Sat, Sun, Mon and this Sunday we will be putting the second coat on the nursery, painting the dining room, and touching up the rest of the house.

Re: *Lucky*

  • I haven't removed any of the baseboards I've painted so far. To be honest, it didn't occur to me. I've used painter's tape to protect the wall and/or floor where need be. They're already painted, but they were really dirty and a lot of that soaked in so I'm just going over them. It usually takes me two coats.

The painting would go a lot faster if DH was helping but for the most part I'm doing it on my own. He's been really busy with school so he hasn't had much time to help. He does when he can but I'm mostly on my own.

ETA: I will admit it's a bit of a pain and uncomfortable laying, and crawling and scooting along the floor painting the baseboards. I would imagine it would be even more so for you. I don't necessarily think that removing them all, painting them, and then putting them back on would be faster but it might be easier for you so you don't have to crawl around on the floor.

  • When I painted all of my baseboards, chair rail, and crown molding, I did it while it was all still on the wall. I would be worried about breaking some of the boards when I pulled them off.
  • We're trying to figure this out too. All of our baseboards, door trim, doors and moulding are wood colored with a low gloss to them, so we want to update the entire house. Originally, DH was talking about just replacing it all, but then realized he'd still have to paint the new stuff. I talked to the paint lady in Home Depot, and she said just to cover it with Kilz or some other oil-based primer, then a coat of white. We already have to totally replace the doors, so I'm all about saving where we can.

She also told me that it's often easier to take them off and spray them, if possible, for the best even coating.
