QOTD

I was just reading an interesting blog? On Yahoo's Shine about bank accounts and married couples. How it is hard now if you have one account but 2 debit cards.

So my question is do you have 1 shared account, both have your own seperate accounts, 2 seperate and 1 joint?

  • We each have our own seperate account and a joint account all with the same bank. We use the joint account to shuttle money to pay our bills.

This.  The joint account is for house/joint expenses.  Separate accounts are for gas money, fun money, etc.  We also only have our debit cards attached to our separate accounts so we don't have to worry about what the other is spending when using them.

  • We are still both entirely seperate on that. No joined accts of any sort.
  • We have two separate accounts and a joint account.  We pay bills and everything out of the separate accounts, same way as we did before we were married.  The joint account is for travel.  We both deposit a certain percentage of our checks each month into the joint account and then use that money for our big trips throughout the year.

  • I have an account and at my bank we have a joint account. MFD has an account at another bank too but puts the majority of his money into our joint account and uses it for everything. I only put money into our joint for bills and household expenses but use my account for spending.

  • we have a joint account with two different cards for most everything--bills, vacations, groceries, etc.  we also each have our own accounts which are for fun stuff like the dresses i am buying this weekend, or races that i sign up for.

often our fun accounts that are separate are empty, so we pull from our joint account after talking to each other first.

  • We each have our own account and one joint for the bills.  At the beginninig of the month we'll each put half of the monthly bills into the joint.

Last week I got mad at Richard.  He is very frugal with his money but he has cash in his account.  I asked him how much money he had.  He hesistated.  I told him that I didn't even want to know.  That is his account so he didn't have to tell me.  He was going to tell me but I didn't want to hear it.  I was pissed because as his wife I think he should tell me, right?  He knows how much I have in my account (which is not much).  I'm always upfront with him about everything.  It's not like I want any of his money.  His money is his money to do with as he pleases.  End vent.

  • DH has something like 4 accounts in 3 banks (I think the local bank counts one of the savings as separate so it might be 5 - one is strictly for Bruins season tickets and softball and another is through his work). I have one account, and recently added DH to it. He doesn't have a debit card for it and I don't think his name is technically on it, but he has the ability to deposit and withdraw. We both know each other's PINs for all of them. I know it's a little unusual but it works for us, especially because I'm not home in time most days to get to my bank so DH can handle anything I need.

  • Everything we have is seperate. I have a checking and savings at one bank, and then another savings at a different bank, and those are mine all alone. And then H just has a checking at a bank. He knows about my accounts though and we always know eachothers balances and username and passwords to check online.
