what in the what?

Did anyone else see this?

Some of the opinions in this thread made me physically ill. The OP especially.

My mind boggles at the thought that people like this not only exist, but are responsible for raising children.

Re: what in the what?

  • I was just reading through that...I don't mean to offend anyone but there really are some ignorant people out there. The fact that they're reproducing to raise more ignorant people just really gets to me. No wonder our country has gone to the sh!tter!
  • OMG I can't believe that is from the October 2011 board (which is technically "my" bump board).  Actually, I can believe it.  A lot of those women are nuts over there.  I basically stay away and mostly lurk/post on the September board.  There was huge drama last week over the UO or the FFFC about women saying that if you have infertility you love your child more or something along those lines.  I honestly don't even read those threads anymore because they just frustrate/annoy/or piss me off!

This is exactly what I was thinking. A lot of those bump boards get nasty... I stay away from them.

Basically it was along the lines that we shouldn't be sending any help to people in Africa and a bunch of ignorant a-holes opinions on that.

The OP essentially said that women in Africa are irresponsible for having so many children when they can't afford to feed them and that the US should stop sending aid to the entire continent because the people over there are just mooching off of us instead of getting jobs and trying to support themselves. She also said that, "as a mother" she can't understand why they would "choose" to "let" their children starve.

  • Flame away, but the bit I read before it was deleted had some valid points. I'm a big proponent of personal accountability. I do have an objection to all of the foreign aid handed out (ie.our taxes) while our citizens suffer. Also that we "help" people in humanitarian ways because they have things we want if we are their friends (ie. oil). However, I think a lot of our programs for our citizens are flawed as well. I'm not wanting to get into a big argument, but I fail to see how these women are unfit as mothers or crazy...and I'm generally very liberal.

  • I still had the thread open at work so I printed the first page to PDF if anyone wants to see.

  • The part that I read was ridiculous because of the sentiment that the women in Africa had choices about a) having children and b) improving their circumstances by just packing up and leaving.  That is incredibly near sighted and lacks an enormous amount of compassion for people that aren't in her middle class America situation.

My biggest problem with that post was the fact that the OP and others on the board were blaming the women of African countries for things which they have no control over. A person with no knowledge of how to prevent pregnancy/ STDs, no access to contraceptives, and who is routinely raped either by their husband or as a result of war and civil unrest will end up giving birth multiple times whether they want to or not. It's a statistical fact. The women in these countries have no other choice and no other options.

I'm all for holding people accountable for their actions, but these women and children have done nothing wrong. The only difference between them and us is the fact that we were lucky enough to be born in a country whith the freedom and luxury of choice.

Also, I'm not sure why, but a lot of people seem to think that the US gives much more humanitarian aid than we really do. We currently give 1% of our annual budget to foreign aid. You can go HERE and put in how much you paid last year for taxes and see how much of your bill went to humanitarian aid. Mine was a whopping $1.86.

Yes, there are big problems within our country that have left US citizens without access to the resources they need. This isn't a situation in which those resources don't exist, or we as a country can't afford them, it's a situation where the government has created so much red tape that those who truly need help can't figure out how to get it. This is a policy issue, not a fiscal issue. Those suffering in many countries in Africa have no resources, no social programs for assistance except the ones provided by the UN through funds from more developed countries. It IS a fiscal issue there. One that we are in a position to do something about as one of the wealthiest and most industrialized nations in the world.

The OP made me angry because even after she was given information about the reality of the situation in several African countries, she continued to blame the victims and act as though she loves her children more because she can afford to feed them.

  • I certainly understand the points on both sides regarding foreign aid. However, for someone who is uneducated on the challenges women are facing in Africa, it's not as simple as saying that they should stop having children that they can't afford. The high rate of rape over there can't be ignored and needs to be addressed. Now it's up for debate whether it's our place to address it, but I don't think you can only blame the women.

    This exactly. Well said Panda!

  • My OB actually goes down to Africa once a year to teach the women there about NFP since they don't have access to birth control. He had a bead system that's really working out for them down there. He really thinks women should be in control of their bodies...I think it's kinda cool what he does.

  • You all have some very good points. What rubs me the wrong way is how she makes it sound like 'if you're in a bad situation, just change it' as if it is that simple for anyone, much less women and children living in extreme poverty.

This is wonderful to hear and very admirable!  1000 points to your OB.
