big chested ladies (and other fashionistas)

I need some advice. What do you think of this dress? I just ordered it last night from Old Navy for my cousin's wedding in August. It's a more casual wedding with just the ceremony and a dessert reception.

http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=54514&vid=8&pid=863594&scid=863594012

Also, how to accessorize? I was thinking these shoes (which I already own): image

But I'm at a loss for anything else. AND this is if the dress looks okay on me in the first place. I was torn between the 1x and 2x (1x is supposed to be size 16 & 18). So I ordered the 1x, because I'm sure the 2x would fit my chest, but would end up being too long and too baggy over my hips/stomach (like most plus size dresses do).

So what do you guys think?

Re: big chested ladies (and other fashionistas)

  • Did you order it in coral? I wasn't sure if that's the color it pops up as by default or if that's the color you ordered.

I would guess that the dress will fit fine because of the modal fabric in the dress. It will make it stretch over your chest but leave the rest the appropriate size. If it stretches to where you have more cleavage than you'd prefer then you can always wear a camisole under it. I read some of the comments and it sounded like people who bought the dress had some similar issues and still liked the dress.

If you got the dress in coral I definitely think you could wear those shoes. I would go with jewelry more on the chunky side since it is a simple dress. I would either do a chunky gold necklace and bracelet with some smaller earrings or since it will be in August a necklace and bigger earrings in a bright color, two colors I love with color are a bright blue (like turquoise) or a bright shade of orange. HTH!

This is what I was going to say!  I like beige/brown/tan chunky beaded necklace.  Something earthy.  That or some turquoise with coral dress would look like nice.

  • Love it, and I think the shoes are fine.

I think you're probably alright on the size, I've ordered a lot of stuff from ON and it's all pretty true to size.

    I think gold accessories....

All of the above are from forever21.com and are freaking cheap. The earrings are $2.80!

  • That particular dress would never fit me because of the seaming under the chest.  Even if it is stretchy, it wouldn't work.

I do like it though, and I think those shoes and the jewelry are gorgeous with it!

See...this is where I get stuck. Some dresses with that seaming work on me and some don't. I tried on a few at JCPenney yesterday and of the 3 with chest seaming only one looked right (but made the rest of me look pregnant, so had to give a big ole "no" to it).

Did you order it in coral?

Yes, I did. I'm not too sure on what color it is exactly. On my screen it looks coral, but the color name is "Crimson & Clover" so I'm not sure if it'll be more red-toned IRL or not.

I feel like this will be the thing I have to do if it actually fits. Most of the empire waisted v-necks require me to wear a cami underneath because of the bulbous nature of my bosom. So I'm okay with that. What color cami would you suggest?

  • Ames-- I LOVE that jewelry! The necklace in particular. I have a hard time shopping for jewelry. I tend to stick to silver-tones and simple things. Chunky jewelry scares me sometimes. It looks good on lots of the ladies I see it on, but when I try it I always feel like I'm trying too hard.

  • I like the shoes with that color but I would go with Turquoise and something chunky! I struggle with those dresses as well... but hopefully it works for you!

Cool, I'm glad you liked it! I thought the necklace was cool because it's a little vial. To put poison in. Or whiskey. LOL

Forever 21 is good for trendy jewelry. They have a wide selection and it's SUPER inexpensive. Can't fit my butt into their clothes, but I like their jewelry and shoes!

Personally, I would do a chocolate brown one to bring the brown from your shoes up into the outfit. If you didn't want to wear brown I'd probably put an ivory or nude one If I wore gold jewelry and a matching blue/colored one if you went with colored jewelry.

That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure if that would be too boring or if it would work depending on the different jewelry types. Now I just hope the dress fits nicely so I can use all of you gals' wonderful advice!! Will definitely post pictures once it comes in.

  • are you sure you need a 1X and not just an XL? It seems really big to me....I have pretty much the same dress, only in maternity, in a XL and its so big. Now I know that the Mat. stuff from ON runs big but even in their regular sizes a XL fits me well, and I'm busty for sure.

I agree with the brown tank underneath and the turquoise chunky jewelry. I might have to steal that idea myself since the dress I have is that pinky coral color. Loving the shoes too!

I think the 1X and the XL are the same?? The dress doesn't run in their women's line, only the women's plus line. I checked the sizing charts and the 1X says it fits a size 16/18. Sometimes I need the 18 for my chest, but the rest of my body fits a 16. So we'll see. In ON regular clothes (like tanks/tees/etc) the large fits me just fine, but any top with any kind of embellishment like a blouse or dress, I need more room in the chest.

I get so nervous about buying things without trying them on first. I know I can send it back, but it still kinda freaks me out a bit.

  • Actually, they're not quite the same. The stuff on the plus-size side is cut roomier is the arms, through the chest, and on pants, in the thighs and hips. I find if I order something from the plus-size side, I always have to wear a cami under it because the arm holes are so big that they show my bra.

Good point....now I'm getting that freaked out cuz I bought online clothes feeling.....I'm okay wearing a cami, but I just really want it to look good and fit. I have such a hard time shopping for dresses/tops.
