Vibes for my Grandma (and mom) and a vent all rolled into one

So my grandma fell on Wednesday night. She didn't think to push her emergancy alert button and spent the night on the floor until her aid came in the morning. I am just SO sad for her she's 91 and its so hard to watch. But then my poor mom (its my dad's mom) ends up having to take care of her all the time since she is the closest and works for a school district so she has easy hours.

It also makes me SO mad that my aunt doesn't show up to help more often. She had a root canal yesterday (believe me I'm the QUEEN of dental work) and you can function a couple days post root canal (for what its worth I'm usually fine by the next morning) and she said she couldn't come down to help out this weekend and next weekend she's going on vacation (she was away about a week ago too)

UGH family members getting older is rough.....

  • Thats sad that you mom is in that poisiton. DH's mom takes care of his grandma too and not too many family members contribute. She is legally blind so there is a lot of going to see her and do shopping for her and stuff.

Im sorry that your gma fell too, so sad. Thats what the button is there for grandma! Use it! Poor lady.

I hope she feels better soon, and your mom can smack some sense into your aunt.

  • Awww, that's SO sad that your grandma was alone when she fell.  That's so scary!  I hope she's okay.

As for your aunt, it's amazing how selfish people can be. Horrible!

  • How frustrating!! I know exactly what you mean about family getting older. It's not fun at all.

  • Your poor Grandma!  I hope she's doing better now.  My mom also took care of my dad's mom because she's much more sympathetic and patient than my dad and uncle.  My mom was an angel to my grandmother before she passed in March, as I'm sure your mom is in your family!  Because I live so far away from my parents, the best way I could support my grandmother was by supporting and encouraging my mom as a caregiver.  It's a difficult role to play, but such an important one.  I hope your aunt can come around, but I'm glad your parents are so supportive!

  • Sending my thoughts and prayers to your family. We are currently going through the same thing. My grandmother is 94 and is constantly falling. She will wait sometimes days before telling anyone or waiting until she is found because she doesn't want to bother anyone...this is especially true when she knows she is having a mini stroke.

My mom is the one to take care of her (this is my dad's mother too). She has the most time to help out, but gets crap from my aunt (dad's sister) for different things....but my aunt doesn't want to take the time off to do for her own mother. My dad travels a lot, so it is harder for him to help (he does call a lot to check in on her).

There is a special place for our moms. They will be rewarded in some way for all that they do to help our grandmothers out. Knowing that your mom is doing a lot for your grandmother, see if there is something you can help your mom out with (even if it is something small like running to the grocery store). I do this with my mom to try helping her out and show her that she is appreciated for all she does.

  • Thanks ladies! My mom is a Saint (DH said that last night when I told him) She takes care of everyone and she loves it. She is the peacemaker all around and wants everyone to be happy.

PS She is also an excellent cook. She will feed you proper like the real Italian she is lol! :)

Can she make supper for me and Stacy on that Sunday we will be in NYC?  j/k

Sending prayers that your grandma recovers quickly!  It is sad to watch older people injure/suffer a major illness and feel like they are a burden to their family.  Kudos to your Mom for helping out.  Curse your Aunt for turning her shoulder on her mom!
