I have been looking for jobs. I had an interview the other day, I'm pretty sure I will get the job. My boss has asked me to stay until the end of August. The new company would want me to start around the 8th of August. The new company was supposed to make a decision next week.
I know the standard is a two week notice but I figured the size of my current company and job, I would do 3 weeks notice. I spoke a little with my boss today and I now feel bad about possibly not staying til the end of August.
Would you give more notice if you were in a manager position but the only person running the office? Or does the 2 weeks still apply and he is making me feel worse.
ETA: The new job is a major jump into my career field (this is a job I started in college) and higher income. If any of that matters.
Re: Need Advice
Congrats on being so close to getting this new job.
In my opinion, you are only obliged to give 2 weeks notice even if you are a manager. This new position obviously means a great deal to you so don't feel you need to stay on longer at the job you're leaving. Your boss will have to make do without you while you move on with your career. I hope this is helpful and that everything works out as you wish.
Thanks! I think sometimes it helps to hear an outside opinion. I like my current boss but I definitely think he tries to turn this and other similar situations to his advantage.

To be courteous and let him know what my intentions are. I don't want to play games or spring anything out of the blue on them.
Yeah, that's not how it works. What if you don't get the job? Now your boss knows you're looking to leave, and things will be awkward at best.

He's known I am leaving from day 1. I got this job in college, I just graduated and will be leaving this college town soon. I do understand that in most situations this is not how it goes. I have told him if I don't get the job I will stay a little while longer (but continue to job search) but his plans are to begin his hiring process later in August.
Thank you anyways for the insight.
In general, two weeks is sufficient. As a manager, though, I'd give three weeks if possible.
