LinkedIn Question

I applied for this job I want crazy bad. It's a very small company, and the owner/decision maker is on LinkedIn. We have at least 10 shared connections.

Would it be bad form to request to connect with this person, even though we have never technically met (which doesn't seem totally unusual as I frequently get requests from people whose names I recognize from my industry circles, but have never actually met)? Or should I go the "Get Introduced" route through one of my connections with her?

Re: LinkedIn Question

  • If you have a shared connection, I'd go that route.

  • Since you have a number of shared connections, I'd try an email introduction before I'd use the "Get Introduced" tool. Can you send email or LinkedIn messages to the people in common and say something like, "I noticed you are connected with XXX on LinkedIn. I recently applied for the position of XXXX with his company and would love to ensure my resume/cover letter gets to him directly. Would you be willing to pass my application directly?"

    Good luck!

  • Best would be if you get introduced by someone whom the guy knows very well and the two have good cordial relations among themselves.

PLEASE tell me your LinkedIn profile was on your application.  PLEASE.  Seeing that you had 10 people in common would instantly make me pick up the phone and ask them about you.  Instantly.

Is this something people are doing nowadays in their resumes? I've never seen this, and my department has a pretty high turnover rate, so I'm interviewing people at least once a year. I've yet to come across a LinkedIn profile.

I don't mean this in a snarky way; in fact I think it's a great idea, I just wondered if this is accepted or would it be frowned upon?

I'm not sure why it would be frowned upon, though I could certainly see people who don't use LinkedIn not look at it.  But the person she talked about is on LinkedIn, and is connected to people she knows.  Having had it on there would've certainly gotten a look from the prospective employer.  For social media and highly networked career fields, LinkedIn is a must.  It seems natural to include it alongside the email.  A little tangential, but when I was looking for a mentor within my company, I'd check to see if they were on LinkedIn and if they were I'd include it in my introductory email so they could see if we were compatible for mentoring.
