Anyone Potty Training? What are your best tips?

DS is doing pretty good.  It's been almost 2 weeks.  Today was the first time I didn't put a pull up on him when we went out.  He did use the potty once at the mall today.  I went to Toys R Us and bought one of those travel pottys that are highly recommend for travel.  I still can't get him to do #2 in the potty though.

I used the "3-Day Potty Training" method and followed it to a T for DD. It basically involves stalking your child 24/7 (for 3 days) while wearing underwear (at home) and when you notice them starting to go, you run them to the bathroom to have them finish on the potty. Even if they have a full blown accident, you dump it in the potty.

It worked for DD, but she was 100% ready, and I was truly on board with adhering to this method.

I have a travel potty (the Potette Plus, with the disposable liners), along with a container of "big kid wipes" (Kandoo, we use them at home after #2, so she's at least used to them), and a container of hand sanitizer wipes. These are permanent fixtures in the trunk of my truck. I've pulled over on 146 to let her go potty when she's felt the urge. But, almost every time we go out, it's a minimum of a half hour in the vehicle before we get where we're going.

Good luck. Potty training is really hard -- for both the child AND the parent. Just be consistent, and hopefully your DS will get it quickly.

  • That's the one I bought the Potette Plus, with the disposable liners!!  I'm just using the regular wipes for #2 but that's a good idea about the hand sanitizer wipes... even to wipe down the potty.  I'll pick some up thanks!

Do you bring the Potette potty with you everywhere instead of using a public restroom?  DH laughed at me when I showed it to him today.  I just don't want to be caught somewhere without a bathroom.

I use the public restroom with DD. She's never been afraid of using the big toilet. But, when I know it may be hard to get to one (like when we went for a hike), I lug it along with me. It's small enough that it can be placed in a reusable grocery bag, along with the wipes, and no one's the wiser. I keep it ready to go with the liner in place. Although, I still travel everywhere with a stroller, so it's easy enough to tuck underneath in the cargo area.

I think I've only used the Potette as a potty seat ON a toilet a handful of times, mostly when DD was first training. They make kid friendly seat covers for public restrooms. Potty Protectors / Potty Covers -- http://www.toysrus.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3242109. I bought a package of those, and always have one on hand, just in case it's a particularly disgusting bathroom. (Honestly, I don't tend to be a huge germophobe, so I just wash her hands really well afterward).

In the diaper bag/backpack/whatever bag I'm using, I have a ziplock baggie with a potty protector, and change of underwear for DD. I have another ziplog baggie with diapers, and disposable changing pad liner for DS. And, then there's the one for mom! A ziplog baggie with a change of underwear, and feminine supplies for me! Because, well, you never know!

SIDENOTE: When I was a kid, my mom had a bucket in our car, and on more than one occasion, it was used as a potty in an emergency!

  • I also did th e3 day method- took a long weekend and it worked well.  The only thing we are still having trouble with is night, she is STILL wearing pullups!  I can't believe she is almost 5 and in pullups, but she honestly can't hold it at night, we have tried everything.  At leats teh day is fine.  That 3 day was great.  We also have a travel potty in teh trunk, only use it when no bathrooms around, but if we can get to a bathroom now we use one.  Just yesterday we were going to NH and she said she had to go(DH was in charge of getting her out teh door and forgot (ugh) to have her go before we left), so of course she had to go on teh way.  she could hole it for a bit until a McDonalds was found... but I was willing to get the potty in the trunk out when it stopped raining, DH didn't want to have her peeing on teh side of the road.  Car doors and my legs block her well enough I think..the travel potties are great.  Get extra bags when you get it b/c it doesn't come with many.
