For those who go up north more often than I do...
DH and I are driving up north (to Gaylord) tomorrow morning. I know that traffic is absolutely horrible on Friday's, but is it still pretty bad on Saturday mornings? If we left around 8am, how long do you think it might take us to get there? MIL mentioned we'd try to all meet up around 3-4 up there, but I thought it might be nice to maybe go on a hike or something before everyone else gets there.
Any thoughts are appreciated!
Re: Driving up north
I've never actually left to go up north on Saturday mornings. We usually go on Friday evenings. I have never had much of any problem with traffic.
It usually takes us about 4 hours to get from Ann Arbor to Traverse City. I imagine 4 hours is probably a good estimate for your trip.

We go up to the Houghton/Higgins Lake area and have never had any issues on non-holiday weekends. I think you will be fine... if anything, I imagine Friday afternoons/evenings would be way more crowded than Saturday mornings.
We take 127 now that we live in East Lansing but when we took 75 before, we didn't have any problems on non-holiday weekends.
Have fun!

We have went up to West Branch several times on Saturday mornings usually leaving a little later then you and there is no traffic. With my H driving he usually take 20 mins or so off the drive..
Have fun up north!
We've never tried 127, I'll have to mention it to DH. It looks like that would be much better than 75 most of the way.
My parents live in Midland (75 to 10) and my sister lives in Traverse City (75 to Grayling) so I head north often. Sometimes there are a few spots of traffic -- it can get backed up getting on 23 from 96, but never too bad. Sometimes I'll leave at 7 or 8pm, rather than right after work, to avoid some of the rush.
I just hate leaving in the morning because I feel like it makes the weekend so much shorter. Plus, I'd rather sleep in after getting there late than get up early and drive.
I don't know if they will open up I-75 to two lanes going north on the weekend between Linwood and Pinconning. Right now it is one lane. This will cause some traffic shift issues, however I don't see that very much trouble happening on a Saturday non-holiday morning. If you leave around 8am then you should make it to gaylord around 11 or 1130 depending on if you stop. Some people take 127 w/no issues as well (we don't, it is out of our way). But I think it will take the same amount of time.
ETA: If you take 75, there is also construction in Flint and in Saginaw just after the Z-bridge. Mostly traffic shifts with all lanes open, but the shifting will cause some delays as people vary in speed.
