i think my neighbors are hoarders...

its a slightly older couple with a teenage son (i think he just graduated from hs). they're in a 2 story 4 br, 3 bath, with a game room, and i think even a study (we looked at it when we looked at ours). they're anti-social, so i haven't even been able to find out their names and they've been in the house for 3 years.

when they open their garage, its FULL of stuff, stacked very high and wall to wall. i'm surprised they can walk in it.

how on earth can 3 people in a house that size have so much stuff that they have to use their garage for storage too??

Maybe the husband has a DIY project/power tool addiction?

Um, not that I'd know about that or anything...

  • The garage is where all of her stuff that he hates lives. And where all of his junk that she hates lives. And where they store the bodies of people who accuse them of hoarding.

I moved here one year ago and there are still boxes in the garage and we have never parked there... Sad

  • Isn't that funny?  I think it must be pretty common though because we have several neighbors like that too.  What's up with the hoarding?

One set of neighbors moved not long ago, and they told me before they left that they had a large number of unopened boxes in their garage that had been moved 3 different times by various moving companies.  They were literally dragging their hoarded items with them from house to house every time they got transferred.

Another set of neighbors pulled all the junk and boxes out of their garage in an attempt to clean it out.  The stuff sat in their driveway most of the weekend while they wandered around and stared at it, then they moved it all back into the garage without discarding much of anything.  ????

  • Our garage is bad!  I inherited all of my aunt's things after she killed herself and I am having a hard time getting rid of some of it.  She was very poor and very proud of her things.  There isn't any family who wants it and I really should purge.

We also have a ton of other stuff...we really, really need to purge.

My parents are hoarders.  Not like on the tv show, but they do have a problem.

  • My parents garage was like that for years.  My mom inherited all of my aunt's possessions after she passed away, and then all of my grandmother's things when she moved in with them.  She is slowly going through things.

We had 3 large trunks that we moved form place to place for years.  They contained old kitchen and household appliances from when we lived in Europe and Scandinavia.  We always thought that we would move back, and they thought these would hold them over and they could slowly replace them.

My Dad also has trunks of gear that he used when he worked in Siberia.  He is slowly purging their contents, as he doubts he will ever be going back.

  • I think a lot of people use their garage as storage. If they were real hoarders they wouldn't open their garage door at all and slink in and out of the front door.

  • MY MIL totally has this problem.  It's constant struggle.  I posted about it once before (not that I expect anyone to remember) because I was really starting to become frustrated with having to stay at the IL's house when we went to see them,  There wasn't even room for my suitcase in their house hardly.

Their garage is also just as you describe their neighbors.  In fact, there's a full-on 40's truck in their garage...but you can't see it thanks to all the stuff.

  • This is TOTALLY my father in law.  We keep trying to get him to watch hoarding shows lol.  But he grew up extremely poor so the mentality of holding on to the posessions you do have is understandable. I just about have anxiety attacks any time I see the garage.  His study is like that as well and do NOT get me started on the "survival gear" he has in his vette.
