30th Bday in 2 weeks!! What to do?? Ideas please :)

The title says it all...I'll be 30 years old in 2 weeks. I'm completely at a loss about what to do to celebrate. DH and I just got married at the end of April and our honeymoon was in Cabo in May. So...we don't have a lot of money to do much of anything. I thought about having a birthday party but we live in a small apt. so we could entertain maybe 4 people at the most. Don't want to ask people to go out to dinner considering all the money they already spent on us for wedding and wedding-related activities.

Any ideas for some budget friendly celebration ideas? Thanks!!! Gift

  • i'd probably do two things - a happy hour with friends (westend bistro has my personal favorite happy hour from 5-7, M-F) and then a really nice dinner with DH (brasserie beck or blue duck tavern would be at the top of my list) on my actual birthday.

policy and mai thai also have good happy hour options

  • I would invite friends out to the bar for drinks. There are places that do reverse happy hours later in the night, or you could go during actual happy hour.
  • Happy early birthday!

When I turned 30, I hosted a Casino Royale theme party.  Guests had to dress like a spy or villain, and I hired Talk of the Town entertainment to deal a casino night party.  You don't have to hire someone, but you could do it yourself (if you find a space).  Does your apartment building have a party room you can reserve?  Maybe a friend has a party room you can use, or would be willing to co-host your party in their home? You could do Texas Hold 'Em poker, Black Jack, possibly roulette if you can get a wheel online.  I was able to make my own poker/black jack tables by getting a felt game table cover on eBay and putting it on a Costco folding table, with a Party City table skirt around it.  I only rented the roulette wheel and dealers from TOTT.  You can design funny money on computer so guests don't bet real money.  I also gave dollar store prizes to the big winners.  The guests mingled very well and got to know each other while playing the games.

When I turned 31, I invited friends to meet me at Palace of Wonders for drinks and a side show/ burlesque performance (it was fun!).  It's now the called the Red Palace.  It was nice not having to do anything to prepare for the party, and people could show up whenever and be responsible for their own drinks.  I brought a cake for people to eat.

I also just went to a friend's bday party where we went bowling.  Karaoke could also be fun.  Cafe Muse in Annandale has private rooms where you and your friends can sing in front of each other and not in front of strangers.  The same company just opened Cafe Musette in Adams Morgan.

  • For my 30th we spent the weekend in the Hamptons!  Although it was a close friends house and cost us nothing but food!  Every other birthday I've done a low key dinner at home or a happy hour.

  • Thanks soooo much!!! Such great ideas!!!! Don't know which one to pick! Smile
