anyone commute to Rockville or Bethesda?

How is it? Where are you coming from? When do you leave?

I always go back and forth about whether or not I'd be willing to commute Laurel to Rockville. Now, I might have an opportunity, but I feel like I need to decide if I really am willing to do the drive every day. There is also a good likelihood that the commute would only be for 2 years.

Re: anyone commute to Rockville or Bethesda?

  • My husband does occasionally when they call him in to work in their other office.

We live near you, and he says the commute to rockville is no worse than his regular commute to Lanham.  It takes him about 40 minutesish, but he does it pretty early.  He aims to get into the office at 7, so he gets in before the worst of the morning commute, and leaves around 4:30ish before it gets bad in the evening.

I have to drive over there for work stuff sometimes, field work, observations, etc and it's rarely very bad.

Once the ICC is built over to our neck of the woods you'd be a perfect customer for it though, so keep that in mind.

This is what I'm thinking. I already get up at 5am anyway, so I was thinking if there is flexibility in the work schedule I'd do something like that - in early, out early. I've driven down there at 9am before and that is a horrible experience! I wouldn't ever plan to be commuting at that time, though.

  • I commuted from Columbia to Bethesda for a year and I hated it.  The problem is that if issues arise it always creates such a long back up.  I usually left in the morning about 6ish and it would take me at least an hour to get to Bethesda, but the problem was that sometimes (and not super infrequently) it would take me 2 hours.  The unpredictability was a huge issue for me and I felt like I was wasting too much time in the car.

I'm going through the same decision process now as I need to get a job and there are a lot more opportunities on the 270 corridor in Rockville/Gaithersburg/Bethesda.  I really don't want to do the drive again as I know that it really negatively affects my quality of life but on the other hand I need to find a job.  So I've applied to jobs there and if I ever hear from one I will really have to weigh that into the decision.

I also drove from Columbia to Frederick and I actually preferred that drive because while the mileage was longer, it was much more predictable and I wasn't in stop and go traffic.

  • So I go from Crofton to Rockville and it's made my life noticeably more miserable.  It's literally hours of my day that I will not get back plus it really does wear on your mental health.

That said, the commute from certain parts of Laurel to certain parts of Rockville would be a totally doable commute.  You can take what I call the "back way" which is 198 (which turns into 28) and once the ICC is finished, you're totally in business.

Yeah, my answer assumes that you are going to somewhere in the Rockvilleish area that taking 198/28 would make sense.  If you've got to go around the top side of the beltway then all bets are off.  that's only a decent drive in the wee wee hours of the morning.

  • Very interesting. It looks like this one would be easy off of 28, it is just a little south of there. See, this is why I need you guys around. I never know back roads. I didn't know you could take 198/28 down there.

  • If you end up there we could have lunch!

Honestly, that commute isn't the best it's been lately what withe ICC construction but it's not bad.  It regularly gets me from Crofton to Rockville/North Bethedsa in an hour.  From where Rt 1 meets 198, it would be more like 35-40 minutes.

  • My husband commutes from Arnold to Bethesda and if he doesn't leave super early and stay late the commute sucks.  He leaves around 4 or 5 am and gets home around 8!  There's no way I would do it but he does it for the money and needs the job.  My commute is 30 mins. and that's about all I can handle.
