Recommend your iPhone protector case
Just picked up my new iPhone. Before even getting the phone I've been hearing a lot about Otterboxes, but when I looked online they got mixed reviews depending on which type (defender, commuter, etc).
I love the look of the Speck and Deflector cases, but wonder how well they actually protect the phone (back, sides, and screen) from scratches or breakage.
So, if you have a case, which kind? How has it held up? Would you buy the same one again, or are there others worth considering?
TIA!
Re: Recommend your iPhone protector case
I have the Otterbox Defender. It has saved my phone a million times, from either me dropping it, or Tracey throwing it when I try to take it away from her. I also somehow got a scratch on the screen cover, and no idea how that happened, but better that than the screen itself. I cracked the screen of the old 1st gen that my mom gave me when it fell face first on the garage floor with just a metal cover on the back. The way this case is built there is no contact with the screen on the flat surface, so if (whenever) it is dropped there's no pressure on the screen. The deflector is pretty, but the case on my 1st gen was about as protective as that one and I ended up with a cracked screen.
I agree with a lot of the reviewers that the rubbery part comes apart from the edges, but it's really no big deal to push it back into place when it bugs me. It adds bulk/thickness to your phone, but I would buy one again in a heartbeat. I keep phones for a long time, and this was the most I'd ever spent on one. The otterbox was a necessary investment.
Yep, I've seen references to cases fitting AT&T vs. Verizon or both.
NOTE: Apparently, the white iPhone (which is what I have) is a little different, too, so must keep that in mind, as well. The Otterbox Defender won't fit the white, but the Reflex and Commuter versions will.
I have a Speck one like this in purple:

I have dropped my phone several times, including face down on tile and have had no problems. The front edges stick out enough to protect the screen at any angle it could be dropped. The back is slick, so I set it face down for more traction (the front edges are grippy). If I had it to do over with, I might just pick a different color, as the dark purple back blends in with our dark furnishings.
I love the Speck case for my 3GS. I also have a clear anti-glare screen on it, which helps with scratches. I have dropped it several, several times with no damage at all.
I like that it's rubberized on the inside to cushion, but slick on the outside so it slides in pockets or in and out of purses easily.
